Neurology is one of those subjects that make most students want to curl up and hide away - it is vast and complex with difficult terminology. This book is a goldmine! It logically breaks down each of the systems, neurological tracts and functions for a brief introduction/refresher of neuroanatomy and physiology. Then it takes the major neurological conditions, grouping them together logically and clearly explains cause, symptoms, signs, differential diagnoses, dangers, investigations and treatment. Although it is quite a thin tome (which I find refreshing) it manages to concisely convey all the necessary information. The layout of each sections is very clever, usually confining the subject to a double page spread, with quick reference boxes and excellent key point summaries at the end of each section. The section on strokes is particularly good. The illustrations are very clear with excellent diagrams, well placed radiological images and photographs or sketches of signs or stigmata of neurological disease. Very handy for those who find revision an almighty chore and who need a format that allows you to pick it up and put it down at a whim without forgetting everything. Also excellent choice for a last minute scan before the exam!
From using this book I have invested in many more in this fantastic series!

This book follows the example of others in this series (An Illustrated Colour Text) in that it covers comprehensively and simply the essentials of neurology and as such it is well suited to those wanting to gain a basic understanding of the subject. Each chapter covers a specific type of neurological deficit and outlines the common diseases and their aetiology, relevant investigations and treatment (medical, surgical and palliative) in a concise format that is easy to follow. There are lots of colourful illustrations which are useful in clarifying symptoms and their causes and tables which give information on epidemiology and demographics. The early chapters focus on neurological history taking and examination techniques and cover this challenging area in a succinct and helpful way. Basic investigations such as EMG, EEG and imaging techniques are dealt with in a separate section. I found the layout of the book overall made it very easy to understand compared to most neurology textbooks and I would recommend this to any medical student or junior doctor who wants to gain a solid basis of understanding in neurology.

This book was a really useful introduction into pre-graduate Neurology. The diagrams were clear and concise and the text was also easy to read, without the usual blurb. The boxes of key facts are useful to let you know what you should learn from a chapter.
All in all, an excellent book. Although not very big, I found this book had all the information presented in a clear manner.
