Product Description

Sony Classical is pleased to announce the release of the recording of one of the world's most famous classical music events: the 2012 New Year's Concert with the Vienna Philharmonic. Latvian conductor Mariss Jansons returns to direct the 2012 celebrations after his acclaimed debut in 2006. The live recording encompasses releases on CD, DVD and Blu-ray. The annual New Year's Day Concert in the stunning Vienna Musikverein has been an exalted tradition for more than seven decades, and the resulting recordings with works from the Strauss dynasty and their contemporaries are among the classical market's most important releases. The programme traditionally revolves around waltzes and polkas by the Strauss family (Johann father and son as well as Josef and Eduard Strauss). In 2012 the programme is once again a skilful blend of well-known classics and six New Year's Concert premieres. As always the concert is bound to end with two traditional encores--the famous waltz The Blue Danube and the Radetzky March.

This 2012 edition in the series of New Year's Day concerts from Vienna features the return of Mariss Jansons to the podium for the event after his earlier 2006 debut. On this occasion he seems more at ease and the sense of greater relaxation is an advantage. Generally he keeps things moving at a fairly brisk rate without ever being extreme. The orchestra play with their customary skill and panache.

The concert programme starts by including quite a number of less familiar items which provide an additional level of interest, even though the audience takes a little time to warm up to this selection. Once the final well-known items are included the responses become noticeably more enthusiastic. This is not surprising - it is New Year's Day after all and quality entertainment is the prime order of the day. As a further Viennese attraction there are two items featuring the Vienna Boys Choir.

Mariss Jansons has had links with both Vienna and Leningrad as part of his initial studies and this link is explored in no less than 7 items including a welcome first appearance of some Tchaikovsky at these concerts. There are further moments of variety on offer too with Jansons demonstrating his performing abilities on not just the railway guard's whistle and by ringing a clock but also, more demandingly, on a pair of anvils. Naturally this extra expertise is fully appreciated by the enthusiastic audience who are by now fully warmed up!

The recording team at Sony have produced spectacular imaging with a range of interesting aerial views of the performers as well as views from outside the concert hall which are inserted at points during the music. The sound in DTS is as fine as you could wish for. The concert is generous at just under 2 hours.

You might think you are getting a sneak preview at the start of this concert. Surely the orchestra is drunk and is having fun with the march and the waltz that traditionally conclude this annual event! Not so! The opening item is in fact jointly composed by Johann and Josef Strauss in which they recall their father's "Radetzky March", and in the second item Johann Strauss weaves many threads taken from "An der schonen blauen Donnau". And so the fun continues. The Vienna Boys' Choir provides some gratuitous vocal colour, the conductor demonstrates how to play a couple of anvils, many rarely used percussion instruments are deployed, non-Viennese composers Tchaikovsky and Lumbye get into the act, and there are the expected ballet sequences and views of the audience, the floral decorations and the glorious interior of the Musikverein, Vienna.

A proportion of the program comprises premier inclusions at this annual event - six numbers here, I believe. Optional repeats in the waltzes are usually omitted, allowing for as many as 23 items to comprise the program. Whereas earlier CDs and DVDs provide only 80 or 90 minutes, the duration here is 145 minutes.

Jansons coaxes luscious sounds from the orchestra, setting slower tempi than usual except in the "Carmen Quadrille". Amongst the orchestra personnel you won't see many familiar faces this time. In the audience you'll easily recognise Julie Andrews.

What will bring a smile to your lips or a tear to your eye may vary from person to person. For me it's been two items by Josef Strauss: "Delirien" and "Brennende Liebe".

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful memory of the most special of days! 12 April 2012
I have purchased 2 copies of both the CD and DVD. I have watched the New Years day concert on TV from childhood and love the works of the Strauss family. This years concert was the best programme I had heard for many years. The surprise and joy of the entry of the Vienna Boys choir early in the first half of the concert will stay with me forever. I have to say that I was actually at the concert this year, sat in the Musicverein in Vienna watching the concert for real. It was a breathtaking, memorable experience. I feel like the luckiest person in the world to have had such an opportunity. the memory will last forever and the DVD and CD are already well played.
