I had got behind with networking technology and wanted to get back upto speed so that we could make use of the new superfast 11n broadband as it has just become available in our area. This book told me all I wanted to know and was espechially good at showing how to secure WiFi networks. My only problem was finding what I wanted to know but as it is a big book covering everything to do with every sort of network I suppose this was to be expected. However, if you want to know anything about networks this book pretty much covers it as it is today (April 2011). These books tend to go out of date quite quickly as technology moves on so check the publication date when buying any computer book / manual as technology does not stand still for long. Generally a good book trying to do everything which it just about achieves but be prepared to do some digging to find what you want!

Brilliant 5 Jan 2011
Format:Paperback
Being a network novice i found this book to be invaluable in my understanding of the many key terms linked with the topic. It even gave me a little more enthusiasm for the subject, after i had grown to hate it. A very worthwhile buy for someone who is new to networks or just wants some more information, this book covers a lot of topics.

Excellent book, very informitive. 25 May 2011
By Mike Lomax - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book explained a whole lot of things to me. I only work with computers on a basic level, like helping people set-up their e-mail accounts or teaching someone the basic computer house keeping like disk defrag. and other optimizing tools. I my self ran into a trouble trying to set-up a home network. My previous set-up worked fine until I replaced my cable modem with a more powerful one. Then things got a little hairy. The new set-up needs a lot more information than I ever knew existed. This book showed me how to find the information on my system and how to implement this information to set-up my network. This book is not equipment specific but it gives you the general knowledge needed to find the information you're looking for. For those of us new to this it also gives us a vocabulary to help us understand the terms used by the veterans. What if you don't have to ask, what do you mean by that?, every two minutes. The time to resolution would be reduced and you would have a better understanding of what the fix was. All in all this is an excellent book with a lot of information that will explain subjects from the very basics to the more advance.

There Are Dummies and Then There Are Dummies 20 Feb 2012
By Lightman - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
It seems I fall into the second category.

This weighty tome was way too technical for me. Notwithstanding the fact that I consider myself to be of average intelligence, I was quickly swamped by what was to me overwhelming complexity. It may well be a very good book, but it's clearly written for a more elite and already initiated readership.

Definitely not for dummies like me.

I sent it back.

Good primer for networking 3 Mar 2011

A good book for the novice networking student. Lots of real-world, practical info and examples. Author effectively injects humor occasionally to keep dry information interesting and improve the learning experience.
