I thought the book well laid out and easy to read. My main intrest in this book was to get a better Winsock reference, so I skipped over the first several chapters of this book. I found that it did much better job of addressing EACH of the Winsock API functions than any of the documentation I've seen to date. I'm a C/C++ programmer, not a VB programmer, and I thought the examples were clear, practical, and generally better than most. It was just what I was looking for.

Although I bought this book mainly for the Winsock 2 information, the authors did a fine job with NetBIOS and RAS. Containing both Visual Basic and Visual C++ code and samples, this book is well worth the money unlike other books I have recently purchased. The authors have a firm grasp on the topics, and present it to the reader very well.

It strikes me a bizarre that this book is no longer in print. It provides the best coverage of sockets programming for Windows that I have seen to this day (I originally bought the first edition of this book and even that is still very useful). Most books that touch on sockets programming for Windows do not give enough detail to translate their content into real-world, high-performance applications. This one does. There are some very good UNIX-oriented sockets books around but Windows-oriented sockets books are sadly lacking. Microsoft should bring this book bang up to date and republish it. There may be a .Net equivalent in print, but there are lots of companies writing high-performance networking applications who don't want to move to managed code. If Microsoft don't want all those companies shifting to UNIX instead they should remember to support the non-.Net work that still goes on.
I should mention that this book doesn't only cover sockets - that is just the bit that is most important to me.

The book has written without any clear thought on layout. Of the many books i have read this one had to be the worst set out. The authors have just poured out all they know. Read more
