Product Description

Review

"The only text available that combines clear yet concise descriptions of orthopedic test performance and scoring with data on the psychometric properties of these tests and measures. This book is well written and well organized and the tables, figures, and photographs greatly enhance the text and make the information quickly accessible to the reader. The most logical choice for a required text for a musculoskeletal evaluation course. It also will undoubtedly serve as a much-used, clinically useful reference text for every student, educator, and clinician involved in musculoskeletal care." - Physical Therapy, review of the first edition

If you are inspired to learn the most sensitive and most evidence-based orthopedic joint exam, this book is made for you. Each joint is covered from this book (including the temporomandibular joint, that is how extensive this book is). This book covers live clinical pictures and combines it with pictures from Netter's Atlas.

Each chapter covers a different joint and explains a whole variety of tests that one may see done by clinicians and orthopedic surgeons. Each test is also assessed, by statistical significance, as how appropriate they are for use in everyday clinical practice.

The anatomy covered this book is essential for medical students, however, the tests covered are above the levels of undergraduate medicine. I would therefore, recommend this book for those that are really keen to learn orthopedics or anatomy, those that want to go into orthopedics as a career choice, and for those doing projects or modules in orthopedics or anatomy specifically.

Although this book is pitched at a postgraduate level, it is worth referring to or having a read if you find yourself debating with others about how significant a `special' joint test is.

Even better than the first one 16 Sept. 2010
By Ben Hando - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
The first edition of this text, in my opinion, set the standard for orthopaedic examination texts. I didn't think the second edition would be better, but it is. All the content has had considerable and valuable updates, incorporating the most recent research (up to 2010). The content is also organized better and it's easier to find specific tests you're looking for. The first text had separate sections for reliability and validity, which sometimes made learning about a specific test cumbersome. This edition has this info. grouped together and it's much easier to learn everything you need to know about a specific test quickly. Additionally, there are recommendations at the beginning of each chapter that provide a "down and dirty" summary of the most pertinent evidence-based recommendations to consider when evaluating a given region (i.e. cx spine, hip, etc...). These are surprisingly helpful when you only have a few minutes to review.

Like the first edition, the test descriptions are crystal clear and easy to understand. All of the content is presented from an evidence-based perspective and clearly referenced. Tests are described exactly as they were in the published research. Drawings, photos and illustrations are first rate (Netter). This text would be worth the cost solely for an anatomy text. But add in all the invaluable clinical information and it's a bargain.

I direct an internship, and this text get's pulled out to answer questions (or end arguments) from interns at least 3-4 times a day. It is a "must-have" for anyone who practices or teaches in an outpatient orthopaedic clinical setting.

Buy this book and you will become a better clinician and diagnostician. It's that simple.

Excellent 25 Feb. 2014

Bought it shortly after I graduated, which I had known about it sooner. Great pics, diagrams, explanations, etc. Netter's plus ortho exam? Such a great idea! For a visual learner, I think this book would be great. Has both pictures (anatomical) and real photos (hand placement for special tests, etc). Well organized and not too much info on one page which can be overwhelming when trying to learn all of this.

Exactly as promised 2 Jan. 2013
By Luis Navarro - Published on Amazon.com

Netter's is my favorite anatomy book and the added special tests are a definite plus. I would rate it 5 stars if it had an explanation on what each special test was testing, which would be beneficial for new clinicians or unfamiliar tests.
