5.0 out of 5 stars Out with the old and in with the new!, 1 Feb 2008
By Mark Reid (Ayrshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I recently moved house to an old Victorian house and didn't really think much about what problems it would create with the PC network. Well, you wouldn't... would you? As soon as we'd got settled and everything was up and running (yeah, the PCs took priority of course!) I immediately noticed a BIG problem with the WiFi signal.

In the last place, the max download speed was 2mbit/sec and this new place allowed for 8mbit/sec so I was really looking forward to trying out this new found speed. Unfortunately, the WiFi connection rarely stayed active for more than a few minutes, cutting off completely for 5-10 minutes at a time. I thought I could live with it and just try to be patient, but it started happening more frequently and with much longer periods of disconnection.

I considered getting someone in to hard wire the house but really didn't want the expense or the hassle that came along with it. I'd heard of the ethernet extenders before and was told that they only worked if the rooms were on the same electrical circuit, which wasn't the case with this new house, so I discarded that idea. I then thought that I'd rather take the chance and spend £54 on two extenders and have them NOT work than spend hundreds on hard wiring that may not actually be necessary!

Needless to say... they turned up, and they worked straight away! No software installations, no messing about with PC settings, just straight into the BT Home Hub at one end and straight into the PC at the other end. I was so impressed that I bought a couple more to have that freedom throughout the house without having to unplug stuff and move it around if I was in another room for a while.

One thing I WILL say is that the instructions say not to add them to a circuit breaking bench socket (ie a 4 way plug with surge protection) because they apparently kill the signal and they won't work. I never actually found any problem with this, and I've got ALL of mine plugged into bench sockets with surge protection and never experienced any problems whatsoever.

SO there you have it... it DOES work outwith a same circuit connection, and it DOES work on a bench socket with surge protection. I really couldn't be happier. For cross-network file transfers I think it could be faster, but I don't really do that very often so I can live with it. I was considering giving it four stars because of this, but that doesn't affect MY use of it so I can't really give it a lesser rating on how it may perform for someone else.

1.0 out of 5 stars too fragile, 5 May 2007
By Lamont Young (Yorkshire, UK) - See all my reviews
These plugs work, although I have had problems with them recently. The main disadvantage over other products are:
1. They are too big and take up the sockets next to them
2. The pins are very fragile
3. You have to push the plugs firmly into the socket to get them to work
4. They are not compatible with older sockets which are slightly smaller - I had to plug mine in to 4-way extensions which affect performance.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful Alternative to Wireless Networking, 27 Jul 2007
By Michael Turff (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Puchased to replace a troublesome 11g wireless network. These work great straight out of the box (no encryption) but should have their encryption enabled using the utility on the CD (or downloaded from the Netgear web site) for who knows how far along the power network the signal is propagated.

Set them up side by side on the same powerstrip so that you can see they communicate and then take the far one away around the house (or to the garage or the shed at the end of the garden?) to bridge your network. My pair are plugged into old house fused wiring and the other into newer extension circuit breaker sockets and work just fine. Much better than the 11g wireless for reliability.

They are bulky so can crowd adjacent sockets particularly in powerstrips but, on the whole, a great solution.
