It pains me to write this, because I have experience of other ReadyNAS units - the older Ultra4 and Ultra6 units, the excellent 516, and the highly reliable rack-mount 2100 and 2120 units.

All of the above I'd give 4 or 5 stars to, but this, the 104, is just unfit for purpose. I'd give it zero stars if that were possible.

We installed one in September and it was fine for just over 3 months (so just outside Netgear's 90 day free telephone support period...).

Then, one day, it just locked up. Completely unresponsive - inaccessible by any electronic method, either for file access, admin interface, ssh connection, even pinging the unit fails.

The power button is also unresponsive, either to the multiple-press graceful shutdown, or the press-and-hold forced shutdown.

The only cure is to pull the power cable and start over, risking data loss.

It then repeated this 24 hours later, then 2 hours after that, then 5 hours later again.

Searching the Netgear forums reveal other people having the same problem, across various versions of the firmware, since release.

To be clear, we are currently using only about 100GB of the 6TB available space, for office-type documents and files used by half a dozen people. We are not using DLNA, nor streaming nor recording video or audio, nor running databases or gaming or anything intensive - although these are all things that should be possible on this NAS.

On advice from the support forums I disabled the DLNA service and any other services not essential to using the NAS (so, no antivirus for example)

I eventually got to talk to a Netgear support person*, who reviewed the logs (which are comprehensive, good!

A super well made NAS.

Looks very good with its classic clean design.

Robust - feels like it will last.

Set up was relatively easy follwing the instructions provided.

More features than I will ever use.

Very fast in operation.

Recommended.

Easy to configure for starting to use it.
I don't like too much the users configuring it's a little bit confusing but the product is promising although aI'm still reading the tch specs manual.
