This is a great piece of equipment for anyone who intends to network more than one computer either at home or at a small office. It's very easy to install and works very smoothly - if you do have problems with connection a quick tip is to press the 'Restore Factory Settings' button at the back for 10 seconds. I'm using a cable modem with Telewest, so if you already have a cable modem (Telewest Blueyonder, NTL etc.) and want to use up to 4 computers at the same time, this is well worth considering.
However, as a Mac user (iMac on OS9.2 environment), the two pieces of firmware for this router provided by Netgear.com, which are downloadable by clicking the 'Download' buttons, are not available to me. I've already notified Netgear of this matter, but all I get is an automated reply, which doesn't solve the problem, and disappointingly they never answer their UK technical support phone number. The CD-Rom (Install Assistant) that comes with this router doesn't really work with Macs either, but you don't need it to install the router anyway - actually no software is needed for installation!. FYI, the manual says it works with Windows 98, Me, 2000 or XP, and MacOS 8.6, 9.x or 10.x. eMac, iBook, iMac, and so on.

    Perfect.
This is the first router ive had and its great. Got it up and running in 5mins. It does everything for you (except settin up the cables obviously). Im using blueyonder broadband with the SB4200 modem and had no problems at all. It detects the ISP and all the details with 1 click of the mouse. then your sorted.
At the moment im using it with ma pc, xbox live and the playstation2 online. its perfect for online gaming. doesnt lag the game up or nothing. no problems at all.
i recommend this product to everyone. 5/5 Buy It!

I bought this as I have an NTL broadband connection and a cable link between two computers. A previous post had mentioned a similar set-up with no problems. Nevertheless I was apprehensive and expected to be fiddling around all day/calling helplines etc. On opening the box, it said that the set-up time was about 20 minutes - I was still skeptical. However following the procedure was a breeze, with very clear and simple steps. I completed it in 15 minutes with both my computers sharing the connection. There are extra ports which will be useful for my laptop. Certainly recommended, especially if you check compatibilty and don't want a wireless LAN.

    Verified Purchase
First, I was surprised to find absolutely no set-up instructions in the box. There is a PDF manual on the installation CD, but that's not very practical when you have to start installation with the PC off and possibly reboot a few times! I also didn't know whether to start with the CD or start by connecting up the router; when I installed my modem it was imperative not to connect it until a certain stage of the set-up. A "quick startup" sheet would have been useful. Even after I printed a copy of the manual off I found it of limited use - very vague and offered little help with trouble shooting.

The router was a nightmare to set up (I'm on Virgin/ntl broadband). The main problem was that it would not pick up a dynamic IP address from Virgin and kept insisting I entered one (VM allocates IP addresses dynamically).

In all, it took me 3 days to be able to connect a PC to the Internet through this router, and then only after I had taken advice from the network guys at work. The solution was to power the modem on AFTER the router, which is the opposite of what is accepted as the correct sequence, but this tricks the router into reviewing its missing connection - thanks network guys at work for that little trick!

Based on other reviews and opinions of people I have spoken to my impression is that 90% of the time you just plug these units in and they work. If you're in the other 10% (like me), you are in for a tough time.

I work in IT and although I'm not a network specialist I consider myself to have a decent level of all-round technical nous, and at least a methodical approach to fault fixing. If you are not PC literate I'd think twice about buying one of these, or start making friends with the network guys at work, just in case!

I have two (update- three, one for a mate) of these units and they are the easiest ever units to setup.

I'm about to buy another for my daughters university digs.

Wireless is trendy, but so difficult to troubleshoot
and the coverage can be wildly varying, from Ok to mediocre.
A cabled sytem works 1st time every time and remains at full speed 100 mbits /sec ALL the time, unlike wireless.

The wire your own network kits costs £25 in DIY stores,
or you can use pre-made cables, these are about £8 each.

Doddle, if you can change a fuse in a 13 amp plug you can do this, promise.

Also, if your neighbors kid comes over with his laptop for help, just plug it into a spare port, jus' like that and it works!

    Chris

I installed this router for my home network where I connected to internet using an NTL cable-broadband modem.
On my existing broadband connection setting the router was extremely easy. User friendly documentation was also enclosed.
This is an excellent product for the money however do not forget that it has no built-in modem, no wireless capability.
