I bought this with a couple of 1Tb Seagate drives, set it up following the user guide and I now have 1 Tb of rock solid (after only a few days admittedly) fully secure RAID 1 storage which can be shared by the whole family including potentially my son at University. The only slight issue during set up was that the software version on the box was well out of date, I guess I got an old box, and the update didn't work the first time, primarily because I lost the network connection during the download/update. Rebooted, did it again and it worked perfectly. For the same price as a single 1tb internal drive a couple of years ago I now have 1Tb Raid 1 NAS, delighted.
I'd like to note that some negative comments about having to access the device over the internet are incorrect, once the initial registration is done you can and should access it locally over your home network. There is no permanent internet link to the box by Netgear or anyone else.

Hi all,
before buying this NAS I read all review and I was surprised someone is completely satisfied and someone else not.
I was confused.
Now I have my STORA and I can write about it.
PRO:
very, very quiet
is smaller that I thought
has a print server too
raid 1 without configurating anything (just plug the disks)
quick copying from pc<->router<->nas
media server
CONS:
useless software
no usb on back panel (it is elegant but it isn't elegant to see an usb cable on the front)
after power loss it didn't resume, you have to manually power on

The box is three weeks old and working very well.
There was one hiccup. The connection kept being lost when connected to the desktop. An updated driver for the PCs network card solved the problem.
I've only fitted a single 1TB hard drive, the second is currently on order.
There is a desktop and two laptops backing up to it (2 via Windows 7, one with Acronis)
The music and video files can be streamed to a PS3 without and of the PC being switched on.
Access to the files can be gained from anywhere with an Internet connection.
One final plus is the printer has been plugged into the USB port and each of the PCs can access it individually. Prior to that I had to leave the desktop PC switched on.
Can't really expect much more for fifty quid.

Great idea
I'm an IT admin, bought this box for cheap networked storage, worst software that I have ever seen, clunky rubbish and unusable. Still not set it up on my network 10 months later.

Don't waste your money
Absolute rubbish. First 1 replaced under warranty after 10 months after it packed up. Current one keeps crashing - every 2 weeks, which involves a system reset and reinstallation... Read more

The RAID1 mirroring on this is just unreliable

Awful, Really Awful
