5.0 out of 5 stars Netgear Switches Just Work! 21 May 2013
Verified Purchase
I've had two 8 port Netgear 10/100/1000 switches running 24hrs a day for the last 8 years. Had to replace a PSU about two years ago, otherwise quietly faultless and fast.
This latest incarnation does what it says on the tin for about 20 less. Doesn't have as many lights, doesn't run as hot... It just works! :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 22 May 2014
Verified Purchase
I am a network engineer and have always been impressed by the netgear products and these gigabit switches are a favourite of mine, I carry several about when working and they always come in handy when needing to put something temporary together or bypass some other units. The performance is excellent and I cant honestly find any fault with them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect unmanaged desktop switch 12 May 2014
Verified Purchase
+ Really solid construction - all metal enclosure
+ Supports 802.3ab (gigabit ethernet) and 802.3az (energy efficient ethernet)
+ Runs really cool and is silent (no fans)
+ 12V 1A DC Power Supply
+ Very small and looks smart
+ Plug-and-play (unmanaged switches don't require any setup)
+ Reliable (it's been running for 11 months without a restart)

I've been using this switch for about 11 months for my PC, laptop, WiFi access point, Raspberry Pi and Beaglebone Black, and I've never noticed any problems whatsoever. I chose it over similar products from D-Link and TP-Link because its metal enclosure ensures good heat dissipation. Considering getting another to hook up my AV system to my home network.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice and robust Ethernet Switch 19 April 2013
By R. Patel TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The Netgear GS308 is a nice and robust. Feels great and has a metal construction, not that you would threw it around, but it's good. I plugged in my Ethernet cables and switched it all on. It handled the traffic well and I was streaming media and I couldn't notice any lag.

Overall, for the price this is a quality bit of kit. It does what it say and is future proof. I assume this is more targeted for small business users, who may need 1000Mbps for the future. However, even they may not need that speed. We have servers at work still running on 100Mbps full duplex.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good solid performance 28 July 2013
Verified Purchase
Unlike much of the plastic office IT kit you get today, Netgear continue with the true "built-Like a tank" methodology of IT kit. this will give years of service; I need extra network sockets when I went wired following the continued intermittent operation of my wireless router, which is from BT by the way - (Nice BT ads, but that's about it)

5.0 out of 5 stars Plug 'n play 27 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase
Plus points:
Great to have a substantial metal case instead of the usual plastic.
Genuinely plug and play: just seems to work.
Does 1000 Mbps so either makes the most of existing network or (in my case) gives some 'futureproofing'.
Cheap compared to their 'big business' equivalents.
Minus points:
Would be better for desktop use if ethernet and power input sockets were all on the same side, or power socket on small side.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Netgear switches are great simple devices which perform reliably year after year. This little box is no different. a solid metal case houses a fan less 8port gigabit switch. The switch is as you expect auto detecting and will adjust the speed of the port to either 10MBps, 100MBps or 1GBps based on the device plugged in. The switch will also detect if bridging is required and turn the port into a crossover port, removing the requirement to use a crossover cable.

All of the network ports are on the front of the device with the power connecter on the rear, along with a kensington lock slot, if you need to secure the device.

I have the switch with my TV, providing network access for all of my AV kit (xBox, Sony Bluray, DVR & apple TV) with only a single cat 6 cable going back to my router. A wired connection is far more reliable than a wireless connection especially when we have multiple wireless devices in operation at the same time.

Overall this is a very solid, reliable switch at the right price point for non business critical use.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reliable and cheap. What more do you want? 21 May 2014

Got to link games console (PS2, PS3, PS4, XBox, Wii: I know, I should get rid of some but I just can't) and receiver (Onkyo). Resulted in a vast improvement compared to WiFi (PS3,PS4, XBox) for reliability.

Very easy to set up and really good to see a power cable of decent length (can tuck the switch out of sight and only have thin power cable visible: keeps the better half happy)
