UPDATED (see below)...

I bought this router as a replacement for the Linksys WAG160N, which had problems with overheating, as I need a stable connection to view the video from an IP camera I just bought.

I read in a few reviews of the Netgear N600 (DGND3700), the there are some issue with the connection dropping out, which concerned me a bit but I decided to go for it anyway and hope for the best.

It was delivered to my parents' house, so thought I would first configure it for their ADSL Max line to see if it seemed OK...anyway, after entering the ADSL info into the router's configuration page via the supplied network cable and getting a green light on the internet connection, I was surfing at the usual speeds in no time. I got the wireless working in a few minutes too...then...I got a red light...and the connection was dropped...I looked at the router status page and the IP address was 0.0.0.0

I was thinking of all sorts of reasons for it...could it be noise on the line, the ISP blocking my SSL port? etc, etc but bearing in mind that the previous router had no problems at all when surfing and downloading over port 443, this couldn't be it.

I looked a bit deeper into some of the issues people are having with this router red-lighting and it seems that there is a common thread. Basically, if you are on one of the older ADSL Max lines, then be prepared for patchy connections...some people are going little more than an hour, or at the most a day or two without losing the connection and having to reboot. I am on firmware version V1.0.0.12_1.0.12 and as far as I am aware, there is no patch for this connection drop-out.

I bought this router in June and had trouble right out of the box. It drops the Internet connection at least once every 24 hours and worst of all it cannot re-connect automatically. I have been on contact with Netgear support since the first day with no success. I have tried everything they suggested and even been through their RMA process to replace the router when they thought there was a problem. All to no avail. I have tried with my broadband provider ZEN to solve the problems and I have ended up buying a cheap router modem for one eighth of the price which works perfectly. I now have a very expensive access point for my network because basically that's all its capable of doing successfully.

Stay away from this device until Netgear sort out the problems. I hope at some point in the future this will live up to it's hype.

I normally take most reviews with a pinch of salt but this product has resulted in me losing much of my hair and wishing to add my voice to the other complainants. I am not easily beaten by IT devices and will try any fix to resolve an issue but nothing has worked with this one. Persistent and random Internet drops which require either a power down of the router or removal and reinstatement of the phone line have bugged me since I bought the router in early June and I now concede defeat. Granted I have neither the highest speed nor best quality phone line in the world (2Megs at most and a low signal to noise ratio) but every other modem works fine. Not sure whether the problem is hardware or firmware but I could not advise anyone to purchase this product currently.

10 years with the almost faultless dg834g and you become a Netgear loyalist. Not really need a new device but perhaps the extra strength from range max and a faster LAN speed would have some uses so the N600 looked perfect. I ignored THE PROBLEMS WRITTEN OF EVERYWHERE because they seem to relate to those on old exchanges, not someone half a mile from a 21CN BT exchange in London (for those wondering about the BT marketing department's idiotic marketing speak that means an exchange with ADSL2+ kit in it). THEY DO NOT. 2 days - 30 dropouts and now with a reconnected dg834g I cannot decide whether to wait for the new firmware upgrade due November (despite the problem surfacing months ago) or just send it back. Very sad.

Owned for just two months before it stopped reliably working. It drops the DNS synchronisation virtually every day but will not reset itself. Caused no end of trouble in the to-ing and fro-ing between Zen ISP/BT/myself. Had to send it back as being virtually unusable. Thank goodness for Amazon!

I can only support the views of so many other reviewers - this router will not hold an internet connection.

I use BT broadband and have never had an issue of connections dropping, but it now happens several times a day (sometimes several times an hour). A key annoyance is that you have to then switch off the router to get it to reconnect. In every other respect this is a good piece of kit, with the USB readyshare drive working perfectly, and with excellent network performance. I understand Netgear are working on the problem (but have been now for several months!), but I wouldn't but this until they fix the firmware (currently on version 12).

For info I have switched to a Draytek Vigor router and haven't had a single connection drop.
