My Netgear 834G router stopped working. Lights on but it was clearly struggling to do anything useful -- and, of course, no broadband. I couldn't even reset it.
After replacing it with my old, less configurable, bigger and clunkier BT router, I started researching what might have gone wrong with the Netgear.
Netgear themselves were distinctly unhelpful. It's out of warranty. You will have to pay a third party to diagnose the fault, or buy a replacement.
Some more searching around, and I discovered a common fault with the router: in some cases, the power supply gradually fails to provide enough power. Once it's dropped low enough, the symptoms I was experiencing start appearing.
So, instead of replacing my router or paying someone else to tell me it was broken, this handy replacement power supply was ordered. Good price, quickly delivered, all you'd hope of Amazon and their tribe of third party traders.
And was my problem fixed? You bet your sweet bippy it was fixed. And the BT router is back in the dark spares cupboard, wishing it was prettier, more configurable and more capable, and my Netgear router is doing it's thing like nothing had ever happened.
