Control your heating with the Nest app

Meet The Nest Learning Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat is a programmer, thermostat and frostat in one. It learns your schedule to programme itself, turns down the heat when you're away, and can be controlled from your mobile phone. It shows you how much heat you've used over the last 10 days, and sends an Energy Report every month to help you track and manage your energy use.

Check compatibility with your heating system, and see how the Nest Thermostat will work in your home.

It's Time To Rethink Your Heating System

Heating makes up over 60% of your energy bill--about £1,350 a year*--but heating controls have scarcely changed in decades.

It's a broken system. So we're reinventing it.

Home

Change The Temperature From Anywhere

Control from your computer or phone

Just connect the Nest Learning Themostat to your home WiFi to control it from a mobile, tablet or laptop. Change the temperature, view and adjust your schedule or settings and see when the heat has been coming on and why.

The Nest Learning Thermostat is secure, private and reliable. Its security features include HTTPS, SSL and 128-bit encryption.

Programmes Itself--Saves Energy

The Nest Thermostat learns from you--your temperature adjustments, your home, your schedule. Teach it well to stay comfortable at home and save energy when you're away.

Auto Schedule

Auto-Schedule

Just turn it up and down. Nest learns the temperatures you like and creates a personalised schedule for your home. Unlike a rigid programmer schedule, Nest automatically adapts to your changing life.

Auto Away

Auto-Away

Don’t heat an empty home. The Nest Thermostat senses when there’s no one in the house and automatically turns down the heat.

Remote control via app

Remote Control

Change the temperature from your mobile, tablet or laptop. You can also adjust your schedule and check your 10 day Energy History.

The Nest Leaf

The Nest Leaf

Look for the leaf every time you change the temperature. It appears whenever you’re saving energy

Energy History

Energy History

See when the heat was on and why, so you can track your energy use. The more you know, the more you can save.

True Radiant

True Radiant

No more guessing when to turn on the heat. Nest learns when to turn things on so it's just how you like it, when you like it.

At Home in Your Home

The Nest Learning Thermostat works with most heating systems, including:

  • Combi and condensing boilers
  • System and heat only boilers
  • Hydronic underfloor systems
  • Air source and ground source heat pumps (heating only)
  • Zoned systems (one Nest Thermostat per zone)
  • Switched live systems
  • Low-voltage (dry contact) systems

Check compatibility with your heating system, and see how the Nest Thermostat will work in your home.

Professional Installation Recommended

The Nest Learning Thermostat should be installed by a Nest Certified Professional. They'll ensure Nest is installed in the right location, attach the heat link and make sure everything' working well.

The Stand

Do You Need The Stand?

The Nest Thermostat for the UK can be installed on a wall, or you can use the Stand for Nest Learning Thermostat to put Nest on a table or shelf.

We recommend using the stand if you don't already have a thermostat, have a wireless thermostat or want to install Nest in a new place. With the stand, you can easily hide Nest's power cable and put your thermostat in a good place to sense the temperature.

The Stand for Nest Learning Thermostat is sold separately.

Shortly after installation:
I purchased this during the free installation offer. The company that came out, Nationwide Heating Services, did an excellent job explaining where it should go and how to use it.

There are 2 parts to the Nest, the actual control unit and a small box. This box sits between the Nest and the boiler. In my setup I was lucky that everything could be wired up close together and so the boiler powers the box which powers the Nest. It looks like it's floating on the wall, very sci fi.

The control unit is brilliant, you can see the designers have put a lot of work into making this a modern thermostat. Controls are intuitive, the outer silver ring rotates allowing you to change the temperature or scroll through menus and you push the unit in to select items.

There is an away mode you can set for when you're on holiday, and brilliantly because you don't actually need to be at the Nest to control it (all the functions are available via an app) you could get you house heating up when you're on your way home as you can turn the temperature up or down as long as your phone has an internet connection.

At the moment the Nest is going through it's learning phase. I'm to adjust the temperature as I normally would so it can learn a pattern. Even in learning it's provided me with a more consistent temperature, I didn't have a thermostat before I could just have the heating on or off.

After only a couple of days I'm loving it and will update this review in a couple of weeks once it's completed it's learning phase.

1 week after installation:
The Nest has figured out how long it should take to heat the house up, now when I adjust the temperature upwards it displays an approximate heating time.

Very pleased with this purchase, whilst not cheap, this is a very well engineered product.

This is the ipod of thermostats - very glossy, and the considerable thought has gone into its user interface. Considerable thought has also gone into the installation process too - making it very easy to wire up.

As others say - do your homework as to compatibility, but it is a fairly standand switching arrangement which matches many external timers. It wouldn't take a professional long to fit this replacing an external timer.

One of the key things to think about prior to purchase is where you are going to locate the thermostat:

- the thermostat communicates to a base unit which is wired to your boiler. This communication to this base unit is wireless (not wifi) and is a more robust connection. Both units will need powering.

- thermostat comes with stuff for wall mounting, a stand can be purchased if you want it freestanding (good quality but pricey at £30)

- thermostat unit is powered either by a wire from the base unit (usually not practical unless replacing an existing thermostat), or by a mains USB power supply. There is a short (1m) micro usb lead supplied (think mobile phone to computer) - too short for my liking, but this is a standard cable and longer ones can be very cheaply purchased and safely substituted. Bottom line the thermostat needs to be near a mains socket.

- thermostat unit has a backup battery which keeps it powered for several hours. This allows you to unplug and move it about should you desire. It is not practical to routinely remove it from the wall and put it in a stand (it is not designed for this).

I have had Nest since November. This replaced a wireless (not internet) thermostat I had. So having had it a few months I am not currently liking it and hope Nest make some software improvements to enable some basic functionality as I'll explain:-

Pros:
1) Being able to turn the heating on over the internet is great as we don't end up returning to a freezing cold house especially when away.
2) Auto away is great. If we forget to turn off the heating when we're out or are out hours longer than we expected to be then Nest Auto away feature senses there is nobody around and turns off the heating after a couple of hours of non movement.

Cons:
1) It is costing me a fortune in gas bills. A lot more than when I had the programmable thermostat. My previous weekday schedule with my old thermostat we used to set the heating to come on at 6.30 go off at 9 then come back on at 2.30 (1 hour before kids home from school) and be on till 4.30 and off again till 6pm (with kids in and out etc) it would then be on until 10pm.
My Nest schedule is to say what temperature you want the house to be at instead of when it comes on. Which is good in theory but to get the house warm for 7.30, Nest would come on at 5.30. I don't want it on that early so I then have to tell it I want it to the correct temperature for 8.30 which means it comes on a 6.30. There is no manual override for the Nest schedule where one can set the schedule according to one's needs - I don't mean one can't do it manually but one can't set a schedule instead of having Nest work out when it needs to be on. Of course this is how Nest has been designed but is costing me a lot of money.

2) There is no way of setting the thermostat schedule to say I want it to be on from 6.
