Meet Nest Protect

The Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm speaks up to tell you what the problem is and where it is. It can even send an alert to your phone if an alarm goes off or the batteries are getting low.

Make sure you have the right Nest Protect for your home. Just check to see if your current smoke alarm is connected to wires. If it is, you want Nest Protect (Wired 120V). If it isn't, get Nest Protect (Battery).

Know more, worry less.

The simple act of beeping has saved thousands of lives. But a beep only lets you know that there's a problem. Somewhere. In an emergency, you don't have time to guess what's wrong. With Nest Protect, you don't have to. Meet the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.

Always know. From anywhere.

Get a message on your phone or tablet if Nest Protect sounds the alarm for smoke or carbon monoxide. It will also send you a message if the batteries start to run low. And you can check the status of batteries and sensors at any time on the Nest app.

Get a Heads-Up before the emergency.

If there's only a little smoke, Nest Protect can give you an early warning before it has to turn on a loud, howling alarm. We call it Heads-Up - Nest Protect lights up yellow and
tells you where the problem is so you can take care of it in peace.

A clear voice when things go wrong.

In addition to an alarm sound, Nest Protect speaks to you with a human voice. It tells you what the problem is and where it is so you know what to do. And if you have more than one Nest Protect, they can speak up at the same time even if Wi-Fi is down.

Makes you a promise.

When you turn off the lights to go to bed, you'll see your Nest Protect glow green for a second. That means batteries and sensors are working. It also means you won't be waking up at 2am to low-battery chirps. Sweet dreams.

Works with your Nest Thermostat.

If Nest Protect senses dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, it can tell your Nest Thermostat to turn off your boiler-a possible source of poisonous carbon monoxide leaks*. Nest Protect's activity sensors also improve the Auto-Away feature of your Nest Learning Thermostat.

Lights your path at night.

Next time you stumble out of bed in the middle of the night, Nest Protect will automatically light your way.

Sees what's invisible.

You can't see carbon monoxide. Or smell it. Its early symptoms are easily mistaken for the flu, but longer exposure can be deadly. That's why Nest Protect constantly looks for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Easy installation.

Both Nest Protect (Wired 120V) or Nest Protect (Battery) take only minutes to install.

Connecting to Wi-Fi and setting them up with your iPhone, iPad or Android device also takes just a few minutes. Every Nest Protect in your home will connect to the others automatically.

I have just installed 3 of these one on each floor of my property. Perfectly simple to install and work out of the box exactly as it says it will on the box. Both hardware installation and software set up could not have been easier. I agree with one reviewer use your own terminal blocks as the supplied ones can't be removed once in place other than by cutting the wire. One confusion in the manual is that when adding a Nest Protect where it says on screen on the smartphone used for setup, make sure that the Nest unit being added is connected to your Wi-Fi network it means to the wi-Fi network of the previously added unit (NESTxxxx) NOT your home Wi-Fi (it is only the first unit that you have to connect to the home network).
They combine smoke and CO detectors. They have voice alarm, siren and include night light and auto battery check. The useful silence feature for the rare false alarm called "wave" has been disabled as it was felt that panicking house holders in a real fire might be waving their arms around so inadvertently might silence the alarm - good Lord you could not make up this rubbish could you?.
The original ones in my main home have had this function disabled - so someone is keeping an eye on me - ha ha!
You must have a smart phone to install and use these items please note.
So now seeing the green ring upon turning off the lights when retiring I can for the first time in 58 years sleep soundly safe in the knowledge that I will not be gassed or smoked to death overnight!

The packaging is very "Apple" as one might expect given their inventors background.

As am update I fitted a battery powered one in the garage and it works perfectly no false alarms as suggested by the nay sayers and doom merchants on here Expensive but worth every penny!

5.0 out of 5 stars Every house should have one! 23 Jun 2014
So you could be forgiven if your first thought was "£89 for a smoke alarm, you must be kidding"... However this really is a case of you get what you pay for!

This could not be easier to get up and running. It takes minutes at most before it's linked up to your wi-if and the app is giving you peace of mind that your house isn't burning down, wherever you are in world. This smoke alarm looks, feels and sounds awesome, it's a must for any gadget lover or anyone just looking for the extra bit of protection it offers.

Easy to set up, easy to use & easy on the eye... Every house should have one!

3.0 out of 5 stars Expensive 27 July 2014
By Dave VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The user guide supplied with mine Nest battery operated unit clearly states "The law requires a smoke alarm on every floor and a carbon monoxide alarm in every room containing a fuel burning appliance". However a recent search of the internet seems to suggest that in the case of smoke alarms this is only the case for properties built since 1992. The fire service website states " Since 1992 building regulations have required that at least one smoke alarm, wired directly to the mains, is installed in every new property."

Also it would appear that carbon monoxide detectors are only recommended. Different rules for smoke and CO detectors apply to some rented properties and in Scotland. I do appreciate the need for safety and any advice to fit detectors will be good advice. But to be informed that something is a legal requirement, when it may not be, is unhelpful.

The fitting instructions for the unit are inconsistent in that the user guide(p7) informs users "If you have a sloped, pitched or cathedral ceiling, Nest Protect should be 90 cm (35 in) from the highest peak" but the diagrams shown seem to contradict this by allowing the unit to be placed anywhere within 90 cm of the highest peak.

For me I think the 'out of the box configuration" is good enough and I don't see any advantage in getting the app and connecting to my home network. If a detector goes off when I am on a Caribbean cruise (always hoping) then I would rather not know until I got home. In my modest 4 bed house I don't think I would have much problem quickly realising which room an alarm was going off in without the need for an audible warning informing me of the location.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple to use and reassuring. 24 July 2014
By Stucumber VINE VOICE
Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
The premise behind the Nest Protect is relatively simple and promises to be of great use: a 'smart' smoke and carbon monoxide detector that connects to a home wireless network and your smartphone and communicates to you when there's a problem and reassures you when everything is alright.

Setup is incredibly simple, downloading the app on to your smartphone or tablet allows you to connect the Nest to a home network. From the app, configuration is easy and took less than five minutes; you can even tell it which room or area of the house it will be in. Physically siting the unit just requires planning position and fixing the base plate with four provided screws.

The Nest, knowing which part of the house it's in, is very useful, when an alarm is activated a human voice tells you where smoke or CO2 has been detected. Having only one detector will, of course, only tell you if smoke has been detected in that particular location but won't guide you to the source. However, Nest having thought this through, allow you to have multiple units connected to the same network, so that when a problem does arise, you are given a more accurate idea of where it is.

When a problem does happen, the response isn't merely the usual beeping. First, when either smoke or CO are detected the light turns yellow and the aforementioned voice alerts you to the location of the problem; second, when a dangerous problem is detected, the light turns red and an alarm sounds in addition to the voice. As they are on the same network and communicating, any Nest Protect in the house will give you the heads up. This sort of information and early warning, could be vitally important in a potentially very dangerous situation. Warnings can be silenced with a press of the button.
