Meet Nest Protect

The Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm speaks up to tell you what the problem is and where it is. It can even send an alert to your phone if an alarm goes off or the batteries are getting low.

Make sure you have the right Nest Protect for your home. Just check to see if your current smoke alarm is connected to wires. If it is, you want Nest Protect (Wired 120V). If it isn't, get Nest Protect (Battery).

Know more, worry less.

The simple act of beeping has saved thousands of lives. But a beep only lets you know that there's a problem. Somewhere. In an emergency, you don't have time to guess what's wrong. With Nest Protect, you don't have to. Meet the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide alarm.

Always know. From anywhere.

Get a message on your phone or tablet if Nest Protect sounds the alarm for smoke or carbon monoxide. It will also send you a message if the batteries start to run low. And you can check the status of batteries and sensors at any time on the Nest app.

Get a Heads-Up before the emergency.

If there's only a little smoke, Nest Protect can give you an early warning before it has to turn on a loud, howling alarm. We call it Heads-Up - Nest Protect lights up yellow and
tells you where the problem is so you can take care of it in peace.

A clear voice when things go wrong.

In addition to an alarm sound, Nest Protect speaks to you with a human voice. It tells you what the problem is and where it is so you know what to do. And if you have more than one Nest Protect, they can speak up at the same time even if Wi-Fi is down.

Makes you a promise.

When you turn off the lights to go to bed, you'll see your Nest Protect glow green for a second. That means batteries and sensors are working. It also means you won't be waking up at 2am to low-battery chirps. Sweet dreams.

Works with your Nest Thermostat.

If Nest Protect senses dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, it can tell your Nest Thermostat to turn off your boiler-a possible source of poisonous carbon monoxide leaks*. Nest Protect's activity sensors also improve the Auto-Away feature of your Nest Learning Thermostat.

Lights your path at night.

Next time you stumble out of bed in the middle of the night, Nest Protect will automatically light your way.

Sees what's invisible.

You can't see carbon monoxide. Or smell it. Its early symptoms are easily mistaken for the flu, but longer exposure can be deadly. That's why Nest Protect constantly looks for dangerous levels of carbon monoxide.

Easy installation.

Both Nest Protect (Wired 120V) or Nest Protect (Battery) take only minutes to install.

Connecting to Wi-Fi and setting them up with your iPhone, iPad or Android device also takes just a few minutes. Every Nest Protect in your home will connect to the others automatically.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Tony Fadell invented the iPod and the iPhone. He then turned his attention to the thermostat and smoke alarm. The results were good, so good that Google bought the company for $3.5 billion. This is the Nest Protect Smoke and Carbon Monoxide detector and it bears all of the design hallmarks that you might expect from the former Apple man. Everything about this product is classy, from the packaging and instructions to the actual product and the way it operates.

This is the battery option, there is a wired version available. If you're replacing an existing smoke detector it's worth checking what you've got before you place your order. I assumed that an existing smoke detector in my hall was battery powered, because I'd replaced the battery in it. Nope. The battery was there in case of a power cut, it was actually a wired detector.

There's a few things about Nest Protect that makes it different. Firstly it's a Smoke AND Carbon Monoxide detector that can tell the difference between Steam and Smoke. Secondly Nest doesn't just beep at you, it talks. One push of the large central button and my Nest very politely says "Ready in the Kitchen". If there is a problem it will tell you "Be aware, there's smoke in the Kitchen" or "Emergency, there's Carbon Monoxide in the Kitchen".

There's a Nest App for Android and iOS that's free to download. It's a clean and simple App that allows you to set the room that you've put your Nest in - you can purchase multiple Nests and set each one up in a different location. The app will then send alerts (telling you what the problem is, and where the problem is) to your Smartphone or Tablet - which could be anything from a battery warning to a carbon monoxide emergency.

There's other nice touches too.

A bit techno geek and expensive but really cool and works much better than the old one it replaced that kept going off every time the toaster was used. The nest has graduated levels which mean you can stop the alarm before it becomes a nuisance. It can send a message to your phone but quite frankly if I am out it's not much good. Perhaps when more system are linked and the Fire Service gets a call then this function will become more useful. Light that comes on when you pass by in the dark is funky.

Watch this in hi def at vimeo.com/107417498 (Amazon shrinks the video, so I mirrored it).

If you're looking for an excuse to justify the high cost to your other half, try this:

NEST protect : STEAM VS SMOKE
"Nest Protect is the first smoke alarm to use a humidity sensor and an advanced algorithm to look for the differences between steam and smoke."

So you could be forgiven if your first thought was "£89 for a smoke alarm, you must be kidding"... However this really is a case of you get what you pay for!

This could not be easier to get up and running. It takes minutes at most before it's linked up to your wi-if and the app is giving you peace of mind that your house isn't burning down, wherever you are in world. This smoke alarm looks, feels and sounds awesome, it's a must for any gadget lover or anyone just looking for the extra bit of protection it offers.

Easy to set up, easy to use & easy on the eye... Every house should have one!

i bought two of these in January 2014. they both had to be changed for new ones in February.

Bear in mind when reading the below, these are two replacement units for two faulty ones earlier.

1) Since replacement, whilst out i have been texted to say my kitchen is on fire twice.
2) This has happened on a number of occasions causing me to dash back (good job I was local)
3) they then both blurted out and texted me to say they have failed and should be changed
4) I took them down and dusted them over - and they stopped beeping
5) They have started number 3 above all over again and i have taken them down again
6) I have now removed them and complained to NEST

I am a big fan of gadgets and quite happy to be an early adopter of new technology so I was very keen to experience the Nest Protect. I purchased one from Amazon on 28-Nov-2013 and installed it on the landing ceiling.

I loved the fact that it combined a smoke alarm and a CO sensor and that it was fully integrated with a very nicely designed Android application. Once everything seemed to be working, I purchased a further four (again from Amazon) on 25-Jan-2014 and installed them in other locations around the house.

They all networked nicely and you could test them all by pressing the button on any one of them. They seemed to have a sensible sensitivity to smoke from cooking. I struggled to get them to silence with a wave but this point became moot when Nest disabled this function due to safety concerns.

However, what made me decide this was not the product for me was when two out of the five of the Nest protects failed noisily. The first failure occurred at 4:36am on 18-Mar-2014. I was so bought into the marketing vision of Nest that it did not occur to me that the intermittent beep I could not locate could be coming from one of my hi-tech "hassle free" Protects that I actually spent an hour hunting around in drawers/shelves to find the old alarm I'd obviously forgotten to take the batteries out of. Finally, I picked up my mobile phone and found a calm message telling me "Smoke sensor failure (Upstairs - Landing). Nest Protect's smoke sensor has failed". The first Nest Protect I had installed had failed in under four months from purchase.

Worse, in order to silence the beeping, I had to get up on a step ladder, get the Nest Protect off the ceiling, find a screwdriver and remove the batteries.
