5.0 out of 5 stars Genial 12 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
It is difficult to review this album without falling over oneself with superlatives. So unfamiliar we are to a new decade, and already we have a piece of work which defines our time. Energetic, lo-fi not quite any number of bands which could be shot off from Joy Division to touches of Moloko, but sounding like something new. A fresh form of retro reflection that comes rarely in the music industry. Music this pure, special and unique only comes from those outside of the mainstream, as "Lonelady" appears as if from nowhere and is currently unscathed by the vicious music industry. With it's 'just a couple of people in a studio' feel, it crackles from start to finish.

Buy this album now, and support more artists like this, and let the record companies know we demand this kind of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars LoneLady, you are not alone 21 Feb 2010
Format:Audio CD
I've been waiting for this album knowing it was going to be extremely good, having heard the 8-track versions of many of the songs. Julie Campbell has developed a distinct style of spikey guitar riffs like shards of glass and a commanding vocal presence - not necessarily loud, just delivered in a way which insists that you pay attention. There are intriguing sounds lurking in these tracks. While there is no actual bass guitar on the entire album, the bass effects at times bring to mind the tolling of a great rubber bell, so play it with the low end cranked up. In a couple of cases I miss the rough-edged punchiness of the more primitive original tracks, where the guitar is more in your face due to there only a drum machine and sparse keyboards to compete with. However, I count myself fortunate to have both versions as they lend themselves to different moods. This is a fine debut album from a very talented artiste who deserves far more recognition than she is currently receiving. Hopefully this will soon change.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Inheritor of Post-Punk 26 Mar 2014
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Like your guitar work sharp and angular? Like your pop melodic and intelligent? Then Nerve Up is the album for you!
Julie Campbell has crafted a superb album that takes it's cues from post punk icons such as Joy Division, (early) New Order, Gang Of Four, Wire, Public Image. But this is no mere rehash, it also serves as an updating of those ideals as she melds with a pure pop aesthetic to make something really rather wonderful. She has a red hot set of riffs, gets beautiful sounds from her guitar and uses them to write lovely bedroom-y DIY songs.
The songs are stark yet textured, glacial yet spiky, intimate yet detached. The standout is arguably "Marble", all shimmering textures and pulsing electronics forming a deliriously exciting song.
An excellent, fascinating album that deserves to be better known.

5.0 out of 5 stars Album of 2010 25 Nov 2011
Format:Audio CD
Discovered this on Amazon recommendations and took a chance on it. It was a revalation, fresh yet familiar its a raw cross of New order meets Moloko. Its a very cut back album not over produced and full of talent the title track 'Nerve up' is with out a doubt my favourite track on the album ,yet the final track 'Fear no more' is very haunting(in a good way) with Julies amazing voice and a lone guitar. Go on take a chance and buy this album trust me it's worth it
