An established leader, but requires some familiarity 10 Jan 2012

I first encountered Nero many years ago when it comprised just the CD burning software without all the extras now offered. At the time, there were several competing programs that did the same job of which all but one have disappeared from the marketplace, although another is supposedly available in German-speaking countries only (essentially Germany, Austria & Switzerland). Consequently, the program has been thoroughly tried and tested by millions of users over a decade or more. The basics have remained constant although the feature set has grown through the many versions.

The core of this package is, for most users, Nero BurningROM which is the means by which CDs, DVDs & now Blu-Ray discs (with the supporting versions and the requisite drive) can be created either permanently or, if using re-writables, erased and re-used. There is an alternative program, Nero Express, that does more or less the same job but does not offer all the bells and whistles that the major program offers. Nero BurningROM, is highly reliable but it does have a learning curve to use it completely successfully. A full manual and complete help files for each component within the suite are available for download from Nero's web site although a bare-bones help file is installed for some. Occasional version updates are available during the lifetime of the software, so you need not pay for a new edition each year.

However the package is a suite of software and not just the two mentioned. Included are programs that allow editing of a variety of audio files, another for videos although some formats of both require additional plug-ins that need to be purchased. Not all users will need more than one or two and most will manage without any. Also included is a media player that supports most 'normal' audio and video formats and some tools which are mostly for the more advanced user.

Although this is the Platinum edition, it is not the top of the tree in the Nero family but is No 2, with Platinum HD above it that offers a few extras including full Blu-ray support.

For me, it is the best by far of the few alternatives although not the easiest to use, at first. With some familiarity, you will appreciate its features and capabilities.

Some problems getting Nero 11 to accept the registeration key. This was due to a key left over from a previous Nero 7 install. It is essential that all references to Nero are removed from the registry prior to installation of v11 (if your using 64bit windows that also includes the SYSWOW entries). Now its installed okay all appears to be well except for some minor issues with Recode.

This software takes quite a while to install followed by numerous updates to download. It is more complex to use than pevious versions. I have had it about a month now and everything works fine except Nero Kwik media, which boots up and after about 15 secounds crashes every time. This is a shame, as the whole product is centred around this feature as a starting point in which to oranise your videos and photos ready to edit and burn - hence the 2 star rating. I have windows 7 so i dont know if the kwik media works any better on previous versions of windows. I am hoping that Nero will do an update to fix this problem.
