Product Description

When John Bandicut sets out across the surface of Triton, he's hardly ready for the storm of chaos that's about to blow through his life. The alien quarx that soon inhabits his mind is humanity's first contact with an alien life. The quarx, part of an ancient galactic civilization that manipulates chaos theory to predict catastrophic events, seeks to prevent a cometary collision that could destroy the Earth. But it must have help. If Bandicut chooses to trust the quarx, he must break all the rules--indeed, sacrifice his life as he knows it--to prevent humanity's greatest cataclysm. Leaving friends and lover behind, hurtling across the solar system in a stolen spaceship, Bandicut can only pray that his actions will save the Earth--even if he doesn't live to see it again. From the Nebula-nominated author of Eternity's End.

Ebook exclusive: All-new Afterword by the author, with reflections on the writing of The Chaos Chronicles.

"Jeff Carver is a hard sf writer who gets it right--his science and his people are equally convincing. Neptune Crossing combines his strengths, from a chilling look at alien machine intelligence, to cutting-edge chaos theory, to the pangs of finite humans in the face of the infinite. If you like intriguing ideas delivered in an exciting plot, this is your meat." --Gregory Benford

"Reveals an alien encounter brushing hard against a soul, and takes us from there to the far reaches of the cosmos, all with the sure touch of a writer who knows his science. Jeff Carver has done it again!" --David Brin

"A complex and believable protagonist--an ordinary man rising to extraordinary circumstances--and an alien presence that is at once convincingly strange and deeply real. I'm really glad to have read this one." --Melissa Scott

"High-octane space adventure: mystery, humor, theoretical physics, and one of the more interesting SF aliens you've likely encountered in a long while." --Allen Steele

From the Author

THE CHAOS CHRONICLES - the journey of (an author's) lifetime
NEPTUNE CROSSING is the first volume of a complex series known collectively as THE CHAOS CHRONICLES. It will be six volumes in all, of which three so far are written and published. The emerging science of chaos provides a theme that runs through all of the novels, both as a literal plot element and as a metaphor for the inner journey of the protagonist, John Bandicut.

The Chaos books marked a change of pace for me: following a number of long novels, I decided to try breaking up my next story into a number of shorter, faster, intertwined and yet self-contained pieces. It's been a adventure for me to write--and, at times, a struggle. But I've felt great satisfaction with the result.

John Bandicut's going through some tough and confusing times in these novels, and he doesn't always understand the forces he's up against, much less have the power to control them. And yet...he somehow manages to find his way, often with the help of unexpected friends. (That's how life feels to me at times, too.)

The first three books of THE CHAOS CHRONICLES seem to have found favor with lots of my readers; I'm going to do my level best to see that the next three do, too.

I hope you enjoy them!

While Clarkes HAMMER OF GOD is his weakest efford I know, Carvers NEPTUNE CROSSING is equally compelling and enjoyable. His advantage over Clarke are his aliens; creatures that accompany the lead charakter on his involuntary and dangerous quest to save the earth.

Just this team of "feet on the ground hero" (human) and "guiding presense" (alien) make this book so interesting.

Although it is the opener for the CHAOS CHRONICLES it is also great as a stand-alone novel. Enjoy the amusing dialoques and the suspensefull plot!

John Bandicut works on an expedition on Triton, one of the moons around the planet Neptune. He finds an alien device, and this downloads and alien conciousness into his brain. It reveals that the Earth is danger from a comet; and working together (not always entirely collaboratively) they try to prevent a catastrophe.

This is a slightly unusual story, and I found it quite interesting as it contains some slightly different ways of looking at things. It certainly kept me engrossed throughout. If I were being critical, there are some parts which seem to slightly disconnected from the main story, but overall I really enjoyed reading it.

The end is a bit odd; it seems likely that this is to try to encourage the reader to seek out the next story; and I may well do that.
