Product Description

Product Description

A field guide to the marvellously diverse creatures of the rainforest, this book includes information on 226 species. It identifies characteristics, similar species, vocalization, behaviour and natural history, geographic range, conservation status, local names and literature references. All species accounts from the first edition have been updated to include the most recent research. All 195 maps showing the distribution and geographic range of each species have been revised to reflect current information. In addition, the colour plates illustrate more than 220 species (including significant colour variants between males and females or adults and young). The black and white plates contain more than 60 images of individual species, mainly bats.

This is a really great field guide to neotropical mammals. It leaves virtually no one out and has easily recognisable, colour diagrams of all the species. The notes are thorough and very easy to use with distribution maps, behaviour, common names and further essential information for every entry. Detail for some species is low, but this reflects gaps in current knowledge. Overall I can't fault it!

It's the most usefull book I own related with the mammalfauna proyects ( inventories, education, management ) we are doing in Central and Western Colombia. Every aspect of the text and illustrations has proven to be very usefull and practical. The taxonomical descriptions are generaly good enough to clasify the bigger species in the field, and the habit and habitat descriptions coincide mostly with our own experiences. The distributionmaps included in the text are also very usefull. The illustrations are sometime a little small, but have proven to be easily recognized by the local habitants, what is extremely usefull during quick inventaries. The relation price-quality is outstanding
