Review

'The second edition of this excellent text has been revised and updated to reflect the evolving evidence base for neonatal practice. It continues to be an essential resource for neonatal staff, containing comprehensive material on all aspects of neonatal intensive care' - Susanne Simmons, University of Brighton, UK

'Advances and changes in practice are a daily issue for health care professionals, particularly so in the field of neonatal intensive care. For this reason the new edition of this well-used text is welcomed. It presents a structure for understanding the specialised delivery of care that neonatal nurses, advanced nurse practitioners, midwives and child health nurses need to grasp and use in daily practice. The chapters are highly motivational…evidenced with relevant references that can be followed through into links with the Internet. Importantly it is well structured and easy to read, involving the reader with topical questions and care scenarios.' - Barbara Weller, Editor, Infant, UK

'Written by nurses for nurses, this thoroughly enjoyable book is an essential resource for the bookshelf in every neonatal unit.' - Valerie McGurk, Nursing Standard, July 2011

This is a comprehensive textbook focusing on the care of sick babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. The text has a British perspective, which is very welcome, since most neonatal nursing textbooks emanate from North America. The book is well constructed, aimed at the nurse working on the NICU. The chapters are well written and utilise evidence-based literature. The text gives sound advise on caring for those sick neonates suffering from a variety of conditions and problems. Practical information is discussed well but the main intention is to explain the reasons behind the particular problem rather than dictate how they should be managed and treated. Case studies ehance this book considerably, helping the reader apply theory in the practical situation. The case studies pose several questions which help with the critical and analytical thinking skills of the reader. The answers to the case studies are embedded in each chapter. A brief explanation of the answers could be apended to assist the less experienced neonatal nurse. Chapters contain relevant information that is enhanced by the use of tables, diagrams and pictures. In addition, each chapter concludes with a substantial reference list to enable further reading or investigation. I would recommend this book for those nurses working in the Neonatal Intensive Care environment and for those undertaking the ENB 405 course as a core text.

Very useful resource 30 Oct 2002

Format:Paperback
This is the ideal 'textbook' for the neonatal nurse in trainning and also for experienced nurses. The chapters are well set out and contain the kind of information you need to know. References are given - important in the light of evidence based practice, and the case studies are thought provoking and helpful. I recommend it to all my junior colleagues on the unit.
