4.0 out of 5 stars their darkest album and one of their greatest 12 July 2006
By sean paul mccann VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
album number three from australias finest was released in 1999 and is clearly a departure from the angry young men riffage of the previous two albums, this is an album that is mature, varied and certainly their darkest although not their heaviest work and it is an amazing album to boot,i remember buying this at university and it stayed in my cd player for ages, such is its power.

The album opens with the operatic emotion sickness which startled me at first,i wondered how an operatic piece could grace a silverchair album but in truth they could never really afford to have a opera group on record, the song builds into a crescendo of fury and emotion and shivers will fill your spine until you have to scream.Anthem of the year 2000 follows and is a fiery, rocky number which could have graced frogstomp, again it is extremely anthemic, ana's song follows which is about daniel johns struggle with anorexia and it is here that darkness really pours from the album, this song is as dark as it is uplifting, the classic and profound lyric 'as long as your'e here,we're not' is very poignant indeed in light of the songs content.spawn again follows and its a brooding, killer track of fury and guile, then we have another ballad that is beautiful in miss you again and the album flows in that sort of direction, twisted lyrics, heavy riffs, violins and the whole works, its a huge album of noise and emotion and a very tortured soul,an album thats as vital today as it was seven years ago,you need this album like you need your heart.

5.0 out of 5 stars Silverchair's best album! 9 July 2005
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
If you are a fan of real rock music, buy this album. there is a song for every occasion! Every song on this album i gove 10/10, and with songs like Anthem for the Year 2000, Satin Sheets, Emotion Sickness and Spawn Again, makes this album possibly the best album i have ever purchased.
each song is different, but still contains the superb, unique silverchair style. Ignore the dull, boring remarks and low ratings by someone earlier, cos the real reviewers have given this 5*s.
This album shows Silverchair's deep, dark mellow side with songs such as Emotion Sickness, Ana's Song and Miss You Love, along with Silverchairs unique grunge/rock style (which can only be described as Silverchair, as there is nothing like it) songs such as Dearest Helpless, Steam Will Rise and Paint Pastel Princess.
This Album is wel worth every penny, and more. I would love to see Silverchair live, as after listenig to all of there albums (many, many times), and seeing there DVDs (many, many times) has turned me into a Sivlerchair-holic!

5.0 out of 5 stars silverchair have their own sound... 3 Nov 2000
Format:Audio CD
Your expectations are high. You buy the cd, rush home with it, nervously but excitedly place it in your stereo. You know what to expect: some quality heavy tunes with a couple of mellow ones to even it out, and based on the first two albums, this would be a fair enough assumption. "Frogstomp" amazing as it was, you'd hardly believe it was four years ago; quality rock tunes. "Freakshow" a continuation of the this trend with a few, but welcome, surprises thrown in, and now "Neon Ballroom". You press "Play", and shock of all shocks...an orchestra! Has the shop put the wrong cd in the case?! Fear not, [enter Daniel] "corrupt again, ignore the pill", for this is silverchair alright, but not anywhere near what you've been expecting. You have a brief flick through of the songs. You're surprised to hear the distinctness of each song, each with their own feel, sound and attitude. You listen again...you're impressed, and rightly so! "Neon Ballroom" is a high-quality collection of tracks, many many miles away from the thrashing of "Frogstomp". silverchair now have their own sound, and it's a fantastic one! "Emotion Sickness" has to be one of the greatest songs ever made...not to mention being a nightmare to play on guitar and sing at the same time. There's something for everyone here, whether it be heavy ("Spawn Again", "Satin Sheets"), mellow rock ("Ana's song, "Miss you love",) or the new sound of silverchair ("Emotion Sickness", "Paint Pastel Princess", "Black-tangled Heart", "Steam Will Rise", "Point of View"), or trademark tunes. ("Anthem for the year 2000", "Dearest Helpless", "Do you feel the same"). Read more ›

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Impressed 5 Sep 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am more of a newcomer to Silverchair and i honestly do feel like ive been missing out!
This album is very diverse music-wise because there are some really hard rock songs on it like "Spawn Again" but then (ironically) the song after it is very mellow in contrast.
The best way i could descibe this album (and it's not easy by any means)is a mixture of say Soundgarden or early Foo Fighters (Pocketwatch/Foo Fighters era) mixed in with some Jack Johnson or David Gray in certain places.
The lyrics themselves are also very heart felt and sincere sounding, Daniel Johns (lead singer/guitarist) is writing from and about his personal experiances with anorexia for example on the song "Ana's song (Open Fire)," which i think also adds a new hidden depth to the album.... see what i mean about the diversity of the album.
Silverchair have sorta been labelled with the "Grunge" term but i think there are much more qualities to the band and so i can't think of a term that would suit them, i also can't think of many people that sound directly like them for the same reason.
I do honestly say if you like any of the people/bands i mentioned i would recomend you to check this band out as you will not be disappointed, and i for one will definatley be checking out other albums by them, i'm very glad i found out about Silverchair, afterall it's better late than never...
