first volume collecting nemi, a cartoon strip from norway that runs in metro, the daily free newspaper given out at tube stations in london and several other places. The story of a feisty plain speaking goth girl and how she deals with everday situations. usually by saying the things we'd all love to say but don't! Thus it's very funny indeed and a cartoon I'm very fond of.

This volume is 140 [approx] pages long, and collects lots of nemi strips. most are the three panel ones from the daily paper, but there are also some longer ones that won't be familiar to metro readers. the book also contains an introduction from the cartoonist who does the strip, and a short interview with her.

A great collection for a great cartoon. Hope there's a volume two

nemi is a newspaper cartoon strip written and drawn by a norwegian cartoonist. the main character is a feisty goth girl who will say the kind of things you would often like to say to annoying people and who would rather spend all day dreaming about fantasy worlds and listening to music than working. thus she can be very appealing.

best known to british readers thanks to the free newspaper metro, who run a british translation of the cartoon every weekday. this is the second volume collecting the daily strips. It runs for just over 142 pages, and in addition to the usual daily strips contains things that you won't have seen in metro, such as longer cartoons that usually run in sunday newspapers, and a few full pages drawings of nemi.

the book has a short introduction from singer tori amos, espousing what's appealing about the character, and a short afterword from lise myhre, the cartoonist who produces the strip. 'nemi is a mix of how we are, how we wish we were, and how we're glad we're not' she puts it, and that's so right, and why the character and the cartoons are a great read. and now you have another attractive hardback book full of them to enjoy and treasure for ever. I will.

Most people will know Nemi Montoya from the daily strips in Metro, although (as with the first volume from last year) those offer a toned-down version that is occasionally out of context.

For a start, the daily strips have blunted the edge of the collected once, either for content or (once or twice) language - that and the fact most commuters won't know their Black Metal, which is referenced a lot. Also, there isn't room for the full-page strips or the full comic, both of which feature here. In fact, the two volumes thus far are a better representation of Lise Myhre's work as they have more characters than just Nemi and Cyan and both have a lot more detail to the characters when you read a full volume of them.

The humour is, as always, spot-on about a lot of subjects, be it music, politics or Goth and/or metal culture, yet they're perfectly accessible to readers who don't know any of the references, so there are layers for people who are looking. And, if they aren't, there's a steady stream of great one-liners and punch lines, be it written or visual.

True, as with the first volume, three or four stripes appear twice in the book, but it's a forgivable oversight as the book is a great bargain because it's more intelligently written and laugh-out loud funny than a stack of other publications.
