Product Description

This book is an entertaining and informative series of sketches of Nelson and the careers and exploits of eleven of his famous sea captains, which the author uses to illustrate the school of Nelson, and his Band of Brothers.
“The whole of the fight lay clear before the Alexander as it bore steadily down through the darkness, with men at quarters, and the stern silence which is part of the discipline of a man-of-war—a silence broken only by the high-pitched call of the leadsman, or the brief, stern word of command to the man at the wheel. As Ball surveyed the scene of the battle, the rear of Brueys' line lay in silence and darkness. Faint points of light - the light of battle-lanterns gleaming through the gun-ports - alone revealed the position of the ships. But the head of the French line was a web of dancing flame. Either side of each Frenchman lay a British 74, and the flash of the answering guns was incessant; their deep thunder shook sea and sky”.
By relying on simple; tried-and-tested tactics, born from an in-depth knowledge of his men, and the manoeuvring, and fighting capabilities of his ships; Nelson laid the foundations, through trust, training, and inspiration, that enabled his subordinates to use their individual initiative to devastating success.
This was never better illustrated than at the Battle of the Nile, which was the first of Nelson’s great victories, and ranks in importance with Trafalgar. Here can be seen the culmination of the tradition of victory that characterized the Royal Navy in this era, which through practice and experience, had produced in the crews an overwhelming confidence in their own fighting abilities.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth Reading 18 May 2013

Potted biographies of lesser known naval captains. Well written and very readable. Quite often the same material has to be presented from a different perspective, so there is reiteration though the author does his best to minimise it.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting view of British saling heros 23 Feb 2013
Verified Purchase
The first part of the book is a rather romanticised personal view of Nelsons Captains but the second part, quite justly, points out that this view has some short comings. Worth a read by naval buffs

What a read, I couldn't put the book down. Learn so much about British and world history. Be great if we still had characters like these brave men, women and children.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is an interesting piece of history. 5 Mar 2014

Nelson is generally remembered for his victories and is revered in modern navies. This book introduces us to a new aspect of his relationships with his subbordinates which we would not otherwise be aware of.

Interesting book written by a C19th author. The 'additional' material helps makes sense of the sometimes contradictory narrative. Worth reading.
