Product Description

Nel Respiro is further proof of the outstanding improvisatory talent of singer Maria Pia De Vito. It was recorded after a European tour by De Vito and pianist John Taylor along with famed guitarist Ralph Towner, so they were pretty tight musically. This CD also throws in Steve Swallow and Patrice Heral on the occasional track. A multiplicity of people wrote the music, although most of it comes from the different line-ups here, with De Vito taking considerable liberties as she develops her improvisational range. The self-penned title track is the sort of multiple-track vocal overlay that Bobby McFerrin has worked with, while others have a more traditional (but still beautifully articulated) instrumental approach. This is a varied and impressive achievement from a big talent. --Keith Shadwick

I can't add much to the Amazon review except to say that this album really shows off the variety of Maria's talent. And yes the musicians sound very 'tight' in the best sense here-- flowing into each other & taking interesting chances. There is some
overdubbing-- but very effective. At times on some earlier albums, I find her voice
a bit harsh-- but not here where the 'burnishment' really adds. If you like chamber
jazz, Norma Winstone or Jay Clayton, any of the musicians helping out, or want to sample avant Italian jazz vocals that are somewhat in contrast to Tiziana Ghiglioni-- check it out.
