Synopsis

New Zealand songwriter Neil Finn made his name in successful 1980's bands Split Enz (fronted by his brother Tim) and Crowded House. With his solo work, Finn has become considered one of the adult alternative genre's most intelligent and sophisticated songwriters. 7 WORLDS COLLIDE captures the best of a series of live performances that Finn and special guest vocalists Eddie Vedder, Lisa Germano, and Tim Finn staged in Auckland, New Zealand during April 2001. With an all-star band made up of The Smiths' guitarist Johnny Marr and Radiohead drummer Phil Selway and guitarist Ed O'Brien, the singers perform a set of music which includes a moving performance of the Smiths' classic lament, "There is a Light That Never Goes Out."

5.0 out of 5 stars Must have for fans, 4 Dec 2001
By jasoncarty@hotmail.com (Dublin, Ireland.) - See all my reviews
Live concerts on DVD/video are usually poor because most groups just flatly videotape some gig and put it out there. It helps if (1) the direction/production show a bit of effort and (2) the gig is an event, and not just some random show off a tour.

Well this is a well made document of a great event. The "friends" in Neil Finn's band are: Tim Finn, Eddie Vedder (Pearl Jam), Johnny Marr, Lisa Germano and Ed O'Brien & Phil Selway from Radiohead. There's also an awesome cameo from Neil's son's band, Betchadupa- their take on I See Red with Eddie Vedder is worth all the money for this disc.

This will not let down any Neil fan musically and visually. The only shortcoming s that there aren't any unusual extras. There's about 28 songs, short interviews and background footage and that's it. A proper documentary would have been nice: all rehersals and shows were in a one week period.

Sorry to go on a bit... This DVD is great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Keep it coming...!, 25 Aug 2002
By A Customer
...Neil, boy, don't stop! If you like Crowded House or Tim or Neil or 'Finn' (they did an album together by that name) then you will love this DVD.
All the best songs, plus a few unknowns, are thrown in. What's shown are all the bests bits from five days of reasonably spontaneous concerts in NZ (rehearsed at Kare Kare beach where some of Crowded House's best stuff was recorded). Although Neil's the star of the show, look out for Lisa 'I don't do black keys' Germano and Tim Finn for the highlights. The boys bring out the best in each other, clear from their duet 'Angels Heap'.
I've seen Neil live (with Lisa, incidentally, Cambs Corn Exchange not long after this DVD was recorded) and he really is incandescent. He's funny and spontaneous, willing to comply with requests, and of course he sounds amazing. Even if you weren't a huge fan before this DVD, you will be after...

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Cd version, 10 Jan 2002
The first great thing about this DVD was the number of songs versus the CD version (which I bought first before I realised it was available on DVD). All the songs that I wished were on the CD were on the DVD; Fall at your feet, Four seasons etc. The camera direction is a bit amateur but ironically it does capture the impromptu nature of the whole affair. Neil's easy going nature on stage comes across very well. I thought the interviews could have been kept separate and more in depth. The background to getting the thing off the ground would have been fascinating. Eddie Vedder just blows the place apart. He still has an amazing voice. I could go on for ever. I am a huge fan and loved eveything minute of it. If you are a fan you'll love it.
