At the end of 1985, Australia's Seven Network cancelled their daily soap Neighbours and seemed content to continue with their other two soap successes Sons and Daughters and A Country Practice, both made in Sydney. Melbourne based Neighbours had not gained the ratings expected in Sydney and this resulted in it's cancellation. Having a 3.30pm slot in Sydney did not help.
Rival commercial company Network 10 saw potential in Neighbours and having already had a good ongoing ratings winner with the Grundy Organisation's Prisoner: Cell Block H, they decided to revive the Grundy series on Network 10 and made a few tweaks to it including sacking Darius Perkins as Scott Robinson and replacing him with Jason Donovan. They also introduced Charlene Mitchell, a new character played by Kylie Minogue. Her first episode (234) and the following 63 episodes (to 297) can be found on this discset. Screening in Australia from mid 1986, these episodes screened on BBC1 in the UK in late 1987 just before the series was moved to a teatime 5.35pm slot and went onto become a ratings hit.
This set features many performers from other Australian soaps, particularly Prisoner which was still being made in the same studio at the time these episodes were made. Anne Charleston, Vivean Gray, Anne Haddy, Margot Knight and Stefan Dennis are just five of the familiar faces from the older show.
These episodes will be a trip down memory lane for some and poossibly the first time that others have ever seen them.
Well worth it. Sit back and enjoy!
