Favorite HTPC Remote 21 Mar 2013

Finally found an HTPC Remote that works.

Easy setup, windows 8 detected immediately on connection.
RF Learning functionality works (can only work for one device, so it's not a multiuniversal remote unfortunately, it's either the TV or the soundsystem to control, not both)
TRACKBALL is GREAT!!! I had the Ipazzport airmouse, but the mouse is way too finicky.
Great form factor, can be held like a normal remote, and can type in data.

Arrow keys are great for XBMC.

A few notes, the menu key serves as the windows key, Back as the ESC key.
It takes a bit of time, but fortunately everything you need for using an HTPC on the couch is there.

Learning function was great as well, with the Light indicating if you had been successful.
Instructions were clear (not a huge amount, but all the basics you need are there).

Almost Perfect HTPC remote 15 Feb 2013
By HomeTheaterDad - Published on
I received this remote yesterday and gave it a good run down. If you are reading this, you have probably been looking for that perfect remote and have done some research yourself and maybe own a mini-keyboard remote already. I own the mousepad version of the iPazzort which I have used near-daily for about 6 months.

One last side-note is that there seem to be more than one version of this remote with slight variation of key labels - at least two versions on amazon. There is also one available with undocumented back-lit buttons which is what I purchased. So, make sure you look at the pictures closely and get the one that works for you.

To the review:

Like most all-in-one remotes, it has a TV mode and a PC mode. I'd almost prefer a slider switch, but this remote has a nicely placed button to switch modes and an LED indicates which mode you are in.

The documentation is thin, but adequate to get you going, using relevant pictures and English that is passable. The learning function is amazingly easy compared to an old Onkyo learning remote I have used for years. It took about 15 minutes to program all the major functions for my projector, receiver, and bluray into this remote.

Despite what looks like lots of buttons, you run out of spots for special functions pretty quick unless you want to randomly assign keyboard letters. A macro ability (sending multiple signals with the push of a single button)would be really helpful here. I put in what will be used 90% of the time by the family and keep the OEM remote in a nearby drawer if I need something more. Important functions such as volume, menu, etc. work in both TV mode and PC mode.

No real documentation here, but none is needed. Plug in the dongle and WIN7x64 immediately recognized the keyboard. My computer is in a closet 20' away and uses and repeater USB that ends in my projector area. I was glad to see that this keyboard worked fine and didn't lose sync at ~15' away from the dongle(35' from the PC). The buttons have a nice "click" feel when you press them and the buttons themselves are rubber instead of plastic giving a nice tactile feel.

The key reason I purchased this remote when I already had the iPazzport is the trackball and better placement of buttons. Trying to do a drag-n-drop or one-hand browsing with mousepad remotes is awkward to say the least. This trackball can also be pressed for a left mouse-click, making one handed browsing on the web or your movie collection a snap.

This remote caters to Win Media Center, but was easy to adapt to XBMC. I am able to browse movies, music, and family photos far quicker and easier with this remote, and the wife has already decided that "I get the iPazz for the other TV."

PROs: nice tactile feel with rubberized buttons, bright backlight(if you purchase that version), lots of buttons, easy browsing with the trackball, almost immediately perfect for XBMC, easy programming, (relatively) easy typing, and nice overall ergonomic feel.

CONs: takes batteries(not rechargeable), no macro ability, no prepackaged controller codes(must program keys one-by-one), LED indicator of mode is less than desirable.

Not that great 19 April 2013

I'm sure there are great PC uses for this, but as a TV/Blu-ray remote it epically fails. I was really hoping it would allow me to type searches into Netflix or Amazon Instant Video on my Blu-Ray, but it doesn't. In fact, the remote is missing a lot of my basic commands for my TV and Blu-ray in general. I'm thinking it may be handy if I wanted to HDMI my computer to the TV and then control the PC from the couch. I'm just not sure why I would need to shop Amazon on my big screen...ha ha

We got this for a computer connected to a TV, and it works GREAT! Trained it to operate the TV easily, even taught couple of extra buttons to operate the AC unit!
