This will not do iTTL. Fit it to the hot shoe of whatever camera you have, film or digital, press the shutter and it will fire. If you do film work it's very old fashioned working with GN numbers etc and making adjustments by trial and error.

If you have a digital camera set your ISO speed, and take a test shot, review the test shot on the back of your camera and make any adjustment using the + or - buttons on the back of this unit. It's dead simple.

But after playing around with it, take this flash off your camera, swith it to S2 mode and set it where you want it to be, in relation to your subject. This way you have a value for money off-camera flash that will be triggered when your on-camera (iTTL or built in pop-up flash) fires. It's got all the movements any other speedlight has, so bouncing is as it should be.

My recommendation for a budget indoor setup would be to use this unit on a sub-£10 light stand, a brolly holder to fit to the top of the stand, a budget brolly, then set this unit on top of the brolly/ light stand and shoot through the attached brolly - you'll get fabulous results for under 50 notes. Just remember to set the flash on your camera to around -1 stop (experiment until you get a pleasing setup.)

Not really a speedlight, not really for mounting on your camera, but a good off-camera main light if your prepared to experiment.

My main speedlight is the Nissin excellent Di866 for my Nikon and Neewer TT560 is used as a slave unit - as such it works well with some experimentation (test shots.)

It is what it is. That is a fully MANUAL flashgun for a STANDARD hot-shoe fitting. For all of the queries, comments and reviews regarding TTL, automation and control or usage on non-standard fittings such as Sony/Minolta the answer is a no, it's not for you.

So why the 5 stars for such a lack of computerisation?

I mainly use flashguns for location lighting or fill-in for model shots. Any form of automation can be adversely affected by such as the location itself or over-bright/dark clothing. Even just changing the composition of the shot can 'fool' the electronics. But by using the 8 step power controls on this gun I can get a consistent but controllable output. Added to a Neewer Radio Trigger Kit and mounted on a lightweight stand location possibilities multiply. Generally I use up to 2 lights in this way. For use as a supplementary studio light the in-built optical slave unit not only is triggered by other flashes, including studio lights but can also be triggered by inexpensive IR triggers, such as the Interfit.

As a manual flash with such a high degree of control, this is a 5 star gun. For those looking for TTL control and automation you'll need to look elsewhere.

I purchased this a few days ago and as always with amazon I was impressed at how quickly it arrived considering P&P was free.

It look and feels like a serious bit of kit, and looks a lot more expensive than it is. As stated in the title of this review it does have its limitations as others have mentioned it wont do iTTL but this doesn't bother me, what it does do it does very well for the money. It works both on camera and off camera, it comes with a little stand for mounting it to a tripod in the box, the range of power is more than adequate for me as an amateur photographer and I have to say I am seriously very glad I bought it.

So why only four stars??? It clearly states that it is for ALL Sony cameras and it isn't. It works with my Sony DSC-R1 which has a standard hot shoe mount identical to most Canon's and Nikon's but does not fit my Alpha A300 ( and I believe all Alpha models have the same hot shoe ) straight out of the box (No adapter is included).
This isn't a major concern however as I purchased a Pixel hot shoe adapter for my Alpha on here for 10.00 which brings my total cost to £47 ( A steal compared to Sony's own speed-light costing 265.00) I just wish it explained this in the product description as I would have ordered it at the same time, and wouldn't be sitting here waiting for the adapter to arrive so I can use it on camera (it still works off camera)

I am going to buy another couple of these as fill in flashes with a couple of cheap light stands.

Great Product, Great Price, just wish the description had been more accurate

*****UPDATE******

I recently got rid of all my sony and nikon cameras and purchased the D7100 Nikon and this flash still works perfectly.

If you're buying this, make sure you understand that it is manual only - it will not meter via TTL, but for me this is an advantage, not a disadvantage. The power levels are so simple to adjust via two buttons on the back and this makes it easy to get just the right exposure. I also have a TTL Metz flash that I use with my Pentax K-5's and the Metz normally stays in the camera bag because the Neewer is just so much better and more easily controlled.

I bought the flash primarily for macro use with my home-made macro flash diffuser, but it has been put to good use in other areas too. It works great as a slave flash (optical) or with a remote trigger. Build quality is excellent for the price (better than the Metz), recycle times are fast and battery life is good.

It comes with a soft pouch and a stand for Tripod use; all in all it is an excellent bit of kit and well worth it for serious amateur or even semi pro use.
