I picked one of these up as I wanted to try an ND fader both for stills and video. I wasn't expecting anything great, but it was an incredibly cheap way to see if i'd use a fader enough to invest in a "proper" one.

As others have reported, the filter is prone to strong vignetting and cross-shaped dark areas across the centre of the frame. The calibration scale on the side of the filter bears no relationship to anything I can see - you certainly can't use mine to judge a particular level of darkness. There's also a warm tint to the filter, but to my eye it's not displeasing, rather like the effects of an old Wratten warm-up filter.

What it took me a while to realise is that you do get a fair old amount of light blocking before the vignetting kicks in - for stills, I could easily get shutter speeds down to 1/2 sec (f8/ISO 125) in full August sunlight (Nottingham, UK), and on a trip to Greece I was able to shoot video at f2.8 @ 1/100sec for blurred backgrounds in bright overcast. So it pretty much works.

All in all, I'd recommend this if you're not certain you need and ND fader but want to try one at minimal expense; be aware that if you get serious about using a fader, you'll want to trade up at some point. If you know you're serious already, don't bother unless you're really strapped for cash.

One further tip; since these filters are so cheap, and the vignetting starts at the corners, it might be worth buying a filter that's a couple of sizes too big and using stepping rings; my fader is 62mm to fit my biggest zoom lens, but when I use it on my 46mm thread prime lenses I can squeeze the better part of an extra stop darkness out of the filter before the corners darken too much. Makes me wish I'd bought the 77mm size...

This more or less works. If anything it goes darker than expected, when set to maximum fade it appears to block all light. It did allow me to do a 30 second exposure on a sunny day, so in that sense I have no complaints. However as noted in another review dust specks show up on the long exposures that are not on either my sensor or my actual lens. I have been able to remove these marks in Photoshop without too much difficulty and therefore given the low price I am happy to keep the filter.

I get massive black indents at darker level. Lens reflection in any bright conditions at any darkness. It's terrible. Save up for something better :)

I have bought quite a few of these N.D. filters recently , all in different sizes for a variety of lenses. I would not have bought so many if I did not have quite decent results. Great service from the company as well.

I was slightly dubious when I ordered this item due to the very low price. However I took it on holiday to Mareira with me and managed to get some excellentshots of the sea with that dreamy smoky look using this filtert. Would certainly recommend.

I bought this filter because it was reasonably priced, I read that on the whole these type of filters gave inconsistent results when used on the max, vignetting etc. Well, this is the best tenner I have ever spent. It worked a treat, on the maximum density setting, I was so pleased that I took the chance and bought it!
[...] maximum density, mid day, full sun.

the quality of this product is pretty poor. on long exposures over 7 seconds, specs of dust become visible in the shots (this is not a problem with my cameras sensor) Also I end up with two corners of my images being much darker than a band through the centre.

Wanted to take some long exposure shots during daytime, this helped me out immensely and worked well. Surprised that something so inexpensive got such great results. Sure you can spend loads on some ND filters, but it's the law of diminishing returns.
