I have always been a fan of Chabrier's Espana but have taken a while to update it from an old record I had. This SACD (also plays in any Cd player)of Orchestral Works by Chabrier was released this year (2013) by Chandos and gave me the idea opportunity to listen again to one of his masterpieces. Neeme Jarvi conducts the Orchestre De La Suisse Romande and they give a sparkling performance of Espana and the other eight Chabrier pieces on this Cd. I had heard the Joyeuse marche and Overture to "Gwendoline" before but it was also good to get to know others like Habanera, Lamento, Bourree fantasque and Suite pastorale etc. The Chandos engineers as ever capture Jarvi and his Orchestra beautifully with their open and spacious sound.

This is a really great CD; how could you not love music like this when it is played with such sparkle. Spirit lifting especially after the joie de vivre of the opening Joyeuse Marche with its quirky rhythmic bite. No one else was writing music like this in the 1880s! Chabrier is a true original: as with so many 19th century French artists, training to be a lawyer simply couldn't repress the creativity that bubbled up - to our everlasting benefit. He may not have had a long composing life but - as this disc demonstrates - he packed a huge and varied amount in. The spectrum of his creativity stretches from Wagner-lit seriousness to insouciant vaudeville and the promenade and on to dance soaked in Spanish sun (if you think you don't know any of his music then listen to Espana). Then there is the delicious Suite Pastorale which feels like pure French countryside. (Try the Dix Pieces Pittoresques for piano from which the Suite is taken; there's a fabulous disc of Chabrier piano music played by Kathryn Stott.) Though he spent considerable effort on writing operas, it is the concert pieces he lifted from them that are among his most interesting work (though the Gwendoline overture perhaps doesn't quite qualify). Chabrier never outstays his welcome though these pieces are not just confectionery. Look below the surface of even the lightest works and there is rhythmic and harmonic inventiveness going on that is unlike any of his contemporaries; no wonder he was so admired by Ravel, Debussy and a host of other later composers. If you like charming, witty, tuneful, unpredictable, extrovert, colourful Gallic music with now and then a touch of pathos then don't hesitate. This disc will give you hours of pleasure.
