Product Description

It's great to see traditional techniques used in a more contemporary way. Drawn thread work is often used to imitate lace techniques, but combined with needleweaving and embellished with surface stitches worked in colouful threads and ribbons, it has a much more vibrant personality. Clear photographs and diagrams accompany the step-by-step instructions for all of the techniques, and you can put them all into practice on the projects, which include bookmarks, greetings cards, a table mat etc. If you enjoyed Effie's project 'True Colours' you'll find this book irresistible. --Stitch Dec 07/Jan 08

5.0 out of 5 stars An embellished treasure of a book 25 Jan 2009
By Elaine B Reader TOP 1000 REVIEWER
This is such an excellent book. The book progresses in a logical manner, with the first section covering fabrics threads and equipment. The next shows how to count, cut and withdraw fabric threads, and learn stitches for finishing edges - antique hem, buttonhole etc. Thirdly is a square open border creating possibilities for embellishment and the fourth section shows needlewoven patterns. The following sections build on these giving ideas patterns and instructions for many useful and decorative projects.

Some of the decorative finishes given are tassels, plaited fringe, twisted cord, wrapped and beaded cord and buttonhole bars and loops.

Several of these are used to good effect on bookmarks - there are lovely examples in the book; a purse edged and decorated with pearls and stitches, a book cover, a glasses case, a bag called diamond and pearls (so called because it's shaped like a diamond and decorated with pearls)and beautiful "sachets" could be used as nightdress case or similar, each decorated with woven bars and flowers in buttonhole stitch and look rather like a picket fence with flowers peeping over the top. There are plenty of projects to put your work to good use, greeting cards, book covers, bags, table linens etc full instructions are included.

This book is one of rare quality, instructional without any waffle, inspirational and with projects that are actually achievable without vast amounts of fabric, time, skill or experience. Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly, A Treasured Artform 24 April 2008
By M. Abdul-Musawwir - Published on Amazon.com
Many sewing Artforms have been abandoned and are not being passed down to the following generations due the advancement of technology, particularly the introduction of automated sewing machines that speed up the completion of sewing projects. I am not aware of any sewing machines that can produce these kinds of sewing techniques, and if they do exist they are not machines that most people can afford, otherwise they would be on the market. This book has beautiful photographs with clear techniques that demonstrate how to produce the exceptional beauty of this AWSOME ARTFORM. This book should be in every library and referred to as an important part of textile history. The gorgeous techniques in this book are the very reasons hand/drawn thread embroidery should be revived, promoted and past down to every generation by parents, schools, craft industries, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the cover! The inside is great! 12 Mar 2012
By Jane in Milwaukee - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I'm so annoyed with the publisher of this book: Milner Craft Series...they should know better! The cover photo on the book looks so dated and old-fashioned; the overall color is a sickly yellow green. But I inserted some photos of the inside pages so you could see how bright and pretty the projects are. And the pages of stitch directions couldn't be more detailed than they are. Absolutely crystal clear how you start and what you do after that. Don't you feel like making one of the projects as pictured? There are others inside but I liked these. I taught a class on hemstitching to my Embroiderers' Guild of America chapter and utilized this book. Well worth the money if you want to learn needleweaving.
Edit: as of the end of June 2013, Amazon did away with most of customer images. Sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book! 28 May 2011
By Cindy Brown - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a very nice book with beautiful color pictures, and plenty of designs to get you started. The designs are great, and threads and fabrics recommended are common and easy to find. However, this book is not for beginners; you need to have some basic knowledge of stitching before attempting this. It could have a little bit more instructions, but otherwise is a great book. I am anxious to try some of the designs myself. This will be a great addition to my stitching library.
