Review

Just from the front cover you can see how good this book is for anyone who wants to create embroidered flowers or birds. I have long admired Trish Burr and her books. Subtitled 'Fresh Ideas for Beginners', this book encompasses work that would satisfy embroiderers of any level. There is a detailed introduction to long and short stitch with step by step instructions enhanced with appropriate photos. Trish really does use her needle like a paintbrush. The projects are wonderful and there are ideas on how to use your finished embroidery. This a lovely book for any embroiderer.-KarenPlatt.co.uk

Product Description

Renowned embroiderer Trish Burr passes her creative secrets on to stitchers--especially beginners--who want to take their needle painting skills to the next level. In 15 projects organized in three levels, from novice to intermediate, Trish provides expert, easy-to-follow guidance on techniques for surface stitching that provide subtle shadings and a soft, paintlike blending of colors. Sections on materials, the long and short stitch, and helpful practice motifs lead to gorgeous projects like Burgundy Rosebuds, a Wild Pansy, and a Racquet-tailed Roller.

Well worth the wait! This new title ties in perfectly with Trish's DVD, introducing the techniques of long and short stitch. Trish Burr is a self-taught embroiderer. This book is the perfect introduction for a beginner to master the techniques of long and short stitch, but also challenging enough to satisfy the experienced embroiderer, who is perhaps seeking a smaller project to make into a gift or card. There are fifteen designs including a detailed introduction to long and short stitch and a handy stitch glossary. The photos are clear and combined with clear instructions, that take you through each stage. You will also find the practice motifs that Trish demonstrated exceptionally well in her DVD. All the projects use DMC or Anchor threads (DMC colours listed but you can easily get a conversion chart). My heartfelt thanks to Trish for sharing this wonderful technique with us and for keeping embroidery alive! Happy stitching!

I hesitated about buying this due to not being able to have a browse inside to see the different ideas and not being all that familiar with Trish Burr.

I should not have hesitated at all, it is a wonderful book with very clear pictures and explanations on every page. The quality of the publication is top class.

It is split into 3 levels of projects, mostly flowers (around 13) and the 2 birds that are on the front cover. Each level gets progressively more complicated or challenging.

Each project is talked through very well by Burr and she bullet points the explanations which I found really good rather than having to read whole paragraphs to get the idea of how to do it. There are photos and drawings of each stage of each project aiding her explanation.

It has encouraged me to buy more from Burr and this book has more than the front cover offers which is a very welcome change to a lot of embroidery books on the market.
