Felt is durable, versatile, malleable and easy to make. All you need to get started is a felting needle, a foam pad and wool, so there is no great outlay on equipment, and beginners will be able to create the needle felties once they have mastered the basic techniques. Experienced felters will also love the inspiring characters: a rocking robin, Russian dolls, a snowman, a sheep, a fuzzy fish and much more.

More About the Author

Needle Felties is in the '20 To Make' series from Search Press. It's the first book I have made for the '20 to Make' series, so I had to more precise and succinct than my previous book, 'Beginners Guide To Needle Felting'. ( The 20 To Make series are compact books ).
The publishers rang me in February and gave me a very short 6 week deadline for the designs with suggestions for some ideas, could I make a cat, simple animals, fairies and a meerkat?
It was exciting to be asked to create a new book. I had to dispel the fairy and meerkat ideas as they were both too large a project for this book, but I have included some more basic doll, naive/Shaker style cat and sheep designs and a few slightly more complicated ones such as the teddy bear and the pig. It was a real challenge to so many diverse and hopefully original items in just a few weeks...especially as making a new design can take longer as one has to experiment, be aware of potential design issues and adjust the designs as one goes through the creative process. It was necessary to make more designs than would eventually fit into the book, as the publishers would choose those that were most suitable. I managed to meet the photographic deadline for the designs, then it was the time for working on the text,it was a busy few months!
Now this book is published I feel inspired to make more projects for the 20 To Make series both for needle felting and for other crafts, so watch this space...

As well as writing craft books, I also teach craft workshops to adults and children. I design and make crafts, selling via the internet, in galleries and at craft fairs. My work can be seen at SusannaW@Etsy.com, where there will also be a longer profile and up to date info on exhibitions, workshops and stockists for my designs.
I hope the books inspire you to get creative and that you have lots of fun making and adapting the projects.

Product Description

Review

A bit of colored fleece and a felting needle will have you creating the 'Matrooska' Russian dolls on the cover. Slow and steady wins the race for the Tortoise Felties. The textured shells of the tortoise are an added touch. The Starfish Felties are sure to delight with the use of beads as an accent on the arms. If you want to try felting, this is a nice introduction to the craft with colorful photographs and wonderful little animals and dolls.-www.examiner.com

4.0 out of 5 stars needled 20 Nov 2012
By K. Platt TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Needle felting is a great craft and one that is relatively cheap to do with needles and a foam base. This book is part of the Twenty to Make series and explores making little characters and animals. I think the author has struggled a bit with the faces - it's not easy to get all those facial features on something so small. I would have put one of the animals on the front cover - the mice, robin, bunny, cat, tortoise or pig I prefer these to the characters. The starfish and toadstool are fab too. If you are new to needle felting, you might also need a book with better technique instruction. This review first appeared on yarnsandfabrics website.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 8 Jan 2013

Not the best book I've bought! Very amature designs. Maybe a good book for a young person who would like to try needle felting.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book 7 Oct 2013
By Harvey
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has lots of nice animals and other projects to make. It has pictures of each completed piece with written instructions on how to make it. I would like it better if it had has simple instructions and photos showing the different steps involved but thats because im a bit lazy when it comes to having to take the time to read the instructions but I do think it would have been clearer to follow if it illustrated the intermediate steps involved. I am looking forward to getting myself organized and trying to make some of the very cute critters. I think this book might be good for somebody who already has a bit of knowlege of needle felting.

The cover photo is the best picture in the book. It's very basic, maybe should be advertised as being for children.

2.0 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing 25 Jan 2013
By JK
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
The designs are (as someone else has commented) rather amateurish. It would be a good book for someone just starting out, or an older child.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic needle felt 1 Jun 2014
By becky
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought as a starter book to needle felting. Basic instructions are all on I've page then the designs from there are individually shown. Slightly confusing to keep going back and fourth, would have preferred to have breakdown pictures of the designs rather than just the finished design. Like I said just a beginner so could just be me...would recommend for easy, basic designs
