An excellent book tracing the development of the underground in the early years through the use of the various maps published by the companies. The book stops just before the modern diagram as a separate book details this. A highly informative and interesting read.

Having been absolutely delighted with Mr Leboff's earlier book on London Underground Stations I looked forward to his latest effort (written, albeit, in collaboration) with eager anticipation - I was not dissappointed.

I must confess that I found the opening pages a little frustrating, dealing as they do with the history of printing and lithographic techniques rather than the actual subject matter of the book, but I persisted and was amply rewarded.

The way in which the book shows how the development of the underground maps refelects and is intertwined with the development of the system itself is masterly, reflecting as it does the inter-company rivalries that bedevilled the early days of the system - the way in which each company tended to publish maps excluding all competing lines makes one thankful for today's unified system.

The book is well written and very easy to read, even for those who may not have much prior knowledge of the subject matter - it is to be highly recommended.
