Product Description

t seemed that the Earth and the Vampire World had been cut of from each other for eternity - humanity was now safe from the depradations of the Wampyr. But this assumption has led to complacency, and while the monsters seem to have been vanquished, Harry Keogh - the World's saviour - is also dead. Only E-Branch - a motley collection of psychics and spies - remains as a safeguard.

This safety is brutally shattered when three ancient Lords gatecrash our world and seek to build a new dominion. Their deadly recruits soon run into the hundreds, and E-Branch soon seem to be chasing a lost cause - chasing fire after fire but never managing to strike at the heart of the evil. It quickly becomes apparent that the fate of this new war is in the hands of one raw and broken man who has been 'chosen' to be the new NECROSCOPE. But he has his own agenda of revenge...

I read this book on holiday and it took all my effort to put it down. As an experienced Brian Lumley reader I found it to be intriguing and involving. The book kept my interest and renewed my thirst for more. In it the British esp branch must begin the defence of the planet against three vampires from the vampire world. These are not the two dimensional creatures from hammer horror films but Brian Lumley constructed vampire whose intellect equals and outweighs that of the people chasing them. The know what they are are have awesome capabillities and powers.
The origins of the three vampires arrival are explained as is the first battle with the first of the three. Fans of the books will know this is a set-up for the next 2 or so books.
The necroscope (the original focus of the books) is involved but is not the original character , rather a passing on of the batton -which leaves scope for future stories. And the scene is set with a marvelous confrontation at the end of the book for a terrifying sequel.
For readers of Brian Lumley I recommend it . For those unfamilier with his work I suggest that you start at the beginning with the first Necroscope book and work on from there.

If you know Brian's books by now you'll some how be able to sense that he his setting the scene for a 5 book special. Not a bad thing but I can't decide whether he's trying to be a good story teller by slowly unfolding the story and creating the characters or whether his publisher has told him to stretch it out for all it's worth. None the less, not a bad effort, but some who might not be familiar with the Necroscope world may find the plot a little slow and the backward references overwhelming. Coming off the back of the 2 book Lost Years effort this is a bit of let down in pace and punch but I'll stick with the series as he had 1 dud in the first 5 book necroscope series which when reviewed overall was excellent.

Invaders introduces a new Necroscope, Jake Cutter, who is forced to take up Harry Keogh's cause and face a terrible new wave of Wamphyri, seeking exile from their alien homeworld. There's Malinari who can tear the thoughts from your head, Schwart who's a deadly shadow and Vavara, a beautiful but hideous(sic)lady! Joining the ESP-talented ranks of E-Branch, Cutter must seek out the vampires and destroy them before they infest the whole world! Having read all the previous Necroscope adventures, I was not disappointed by this one. It has superheroes, blood-thirsty monsters, a little romance(yuk)but mainly otherworldly action and terror. Can't wait for the next installment!
