Review

‘Since reading Lumley’s Necroscope series, I know that vampires really do exist.’ H.R. Giger

‘Like the vampires it so full-bloodedly portrays, Brian Lumley's Necroscope series just gets stronger. His lively mix of action and monstrosity transmutes the base cliché of the vampire and turns it into a wonderfully contemporary bane.’ Fear Magazine

Product Description

Harry Keogh is a necroscope – he knows the thoughts of corpses in their graves. Unfortunately for Harry, his talent works both ways. A maniacal murderer is on the loose, and the dead spirits of the madman’s victims reach out to ask Harry Keogh to solve the crimes.

After the battles of Deadspeak, Harry Keogh has regained his necroscopic abilities. He can once again travel instantaneouslyh between places and times via the marvellous mathematics of the Mobius Continuum. He can once again speak with the dead.

But the necroscope’s bargain with Faethor Farenczy, father of vampires, has sown the seed of Harry’s own downfall – a vampire seed!

Deep in the recesses of Harry’s mind grows a vampire that might someday be the greatest vampire of all. But now Harry is shunned by everyone, the living and the dead … except for the tortured victims of a maniacal serial killer who cry out for justice. Harry is the only person who can identify and find this vile murderer.

It’s high tide in a sea of blood but for Harry Keogh the tide has finally turned. For even as he pursues the serial killer, he also fights the spawn inside him. His greatest battle is with himself and the plague he carries, for the necroscope is now a vampire.

As the Necroscope, Harry Keogh has the unique ability to speak with the dead. But now that he has become infected with vampirism, the dead shun him as they do all vampires. Most of his former friends at E-branch (short for ESPionage), sensing a change in Harry, regard him with suspicion. Nonetheless, he finds himself helping to track a bizarre killer, a sadist who tortures his victims not only before murdering them but, with his necromantic powers, even after they have died.

Harry knows that with the change in his nature E-branch will give him no peace in this world; he ultimately must retreat to the universe where vampires -- the Wamphyri -- originated. There he discovers a new romantic interest, the one Wamphyri Lady remaining in their traditional stronghold. The few other Wamphyri survivors of the war described in NECROSCOPE III: THE SOURCE have fled to the arctic wastes of their world. Wamphyri Lords Shaitan and Shaithis, however, are planning a comeback -- and Harry does not have resources to fight them as he has before.

DEADSPAWN has the densely plotted suspense and spy/counterspy tactics of previous Necroscope novels, and just when you think there can't be one more twist -- there is! Time comes full circle in a thought-provoking finale that makes Harry a figure of cosmological significance, at once an end and beginning to the world of Lumley's Wamphyri.

Easily the nost erotic of the books, it is simply another fantastic line of the Keogh famliy stories. Lumley's one upsmanship of the type of characters ( just when you thought that the could be nothing MORE EVIL!!!) continues to flow. Like all the prior books in this series, I can't wait for the next one....

The end 20 Jan 2012
Format:Paperback
A fitting crescendo for the series, this book ends what I consider to be the classic series of Necroscope books. It is filled with wonder, pathos, wickedness and twists that play on everything we've learned from the previous four.

The book should make you sad and thrilled in equal measures as it draws to a close.

Cannot give too detailed a reviews without spoiling things, but simply, if you enjoyed the original Necroscope book, read at least to this book and your time has been very well spent.
