Biography

In April 2011 Marius Neset released Golden Xplosion, an album that led to the saxophonist and composer becoming one of the most talked about newcomers on the European jazz scene in recent years. At just 25 years old, he was described by Terje Mosnes in Norway’s Dagbladet as “the most talented Norwegian saxophonist since Jan Garbarek in the 1960s”, but it is the maturity in ... Product Description

Review

The thought of a Norwegian tuba and sax duet might not set the heart racing, but Herskedal's compositions for earthy brass and airy reed, plus the ambient hum of a vocal ensemble on three tracks, makes for one of the most compelling sounds of the year. A limited Balkan vamp aside, this aims for the skies and gets there, yet again confirming sax-man Neset's promise. They end with a perfect version of Abdullah Ibrahim's most perfect song, The Wedding. FOUR STARS --Independent on Sunday

A GLORIOUSLY unlikely and intruiging pairing on the trailblazing Edition label delivers a remarkable album of great beauty and creativity. Daniel Herskedal (tuba) and Marius Neset (saxophones) present a collection of sublime, sometimes quirky, originals - plus a great nod to Abdullah Ibrahim - with their new release, Neck of the Woods. The enormously talented Neset (of Golden Xplosion brilliance) teams up with the extraordinarily accomplished Herskedal to unveil something of a unique sound which, happily, is difficult to categorise.

With an occasional, seamless chorus of wordless, male voices (Svanholm Singers), Herskedal and Neset have created a sumptuous and varied soundworld, achieved in part by a sensitive, organic layering and exploration of their instruments. The opening title track announces a melody of anthemic scale; the soaring, screaming sax of Neset melding superbly with the singers, the tuba offering a buoyant underpinning. The `big tune' eventually gives way to a sequence of tender, emotional yearning, before finally returning.

Tuba players are perhaps less obvious as soloists. However, Herskedal dispels this idea with some of the most agile playing imaginable (Lutra Lutra makes the point!), along with a host of fascinating, atmospheric techniques. He seemingly extends his range by vocalising through the mouthpiece, as well as producing bizarre, earthy rumblings at the other extreme. His Dragon's Eye transports us to a dark and fast-moving fairytale landscape, with smouldering, fire-breathing, nostril-flaring beast chasing in our footprints (please... don't have nightmares!) - an engaging and vivid `sound painting' indeed.

I was wondering how to sum up the feelings prompted in me by this interesting new album. On Twitter I posted one word - sublime. I think I have another three words inspired by Shakespeare " ...a dying fall". If you never knew what that meant, then listen to this album and you may find they make sense. This album is the latest from the Edition mine of beautiful music. The cover is lovely, the CD itself is a work of art with delicate snowy patterns on it. Norwegians Daniel Herskedal on tuba and Marius Neset on saxophones are supported by the Svanholm Singers from Sweden. This is not just everyday Scandinavian melancholy, no there's humour and playfulness here, wistfulness and peace within its forty minutes. It creates a very special mood, not one to easily classify, not least because of the unusual pairing of instruments. I think it will grow on you. Most of the compositions are by Daniel except for The Wedding by Abdullah Ibrahim.

Marius literally blew us off our feet last year with his Golden Xplosion tour and album. He's spellbinding in performance, you can feel heat, there is so much energy in the room emanating from him. His saxophone seems to float, it's a living thing almost. I recently saw him at Pizza Express where he surprised even himself at the tempo he played City on Fire, blisteringly fast. I also saw him at St Georges Brandon Hill where he revelled in the perfect acoustic. But it's not just technique or virtuosity you remember with Marius, it's passion and fire, the sheer joy of performance.

The first and title track Neck of the Woods will leave you spellbound, Marius and Daniel have created a piece of heartbreaking beauty.

For the uninitiated, this is a collaboration between Scandinavias mos potent new musicians<Daniel HerskedalCity Storiesand Marius NesetGolden Xplosion - Marius Neset The tunes echo the sound of the Scandinavian Landscape and are absolutely beautiful.
This is not music to chill out to.it is too good for that, ity is music to listen to contemplativly, your soul will never be the same.
1)"Neck of the woods"Is a beautifully constructed piece of controlled playing,it would be churlish to quote influences but inevitably Jan Garbarek springs to mind,
2)"Preludium"reminds me a little of John Surman.
3)"Lutra lutra" a slight feel of the Klezmatics here
4)"Eg er framund"a very atmospheric piece, which soubds like music from the north of Sammiland, where Norway meets the Arctic Circle.
5)"The shepherd"a short link to;
6)"Aras dance"again a very Jan Garbarek sounding tune that suits the mood perfectly
7)The christmas song"track seven does not play on my player
8)"Dragons eye"again another short, highly entertaining piece.
9)"Introduction to swan island"another short piece of music.which segues into the much longer
10)"Swan island"which is very calm and reflective.
11)" The wedding"compoesd by Abdullah Ibrahim, and is the only non original on the album..
In Short than a very lovely aalbum indeed.
I have given this only four stars and not five due to the faulty pressing
