Product Description

Product Description

This is the original six-part BBC "Radio 4" comedy sci-fi series starring Mark Gatiss and David Warner. 'Doctor Who fans may well have found a new love-object' - "The Guardian." 'A winning blend of Doomwatch, Quatermass and British silliness that has cult written all over it' - "The Times". The year is 2099 and Professor Nebulous (Mark Gatiss, "League of Gentlemen") is the director of eco-troubleshooting organisation K.E.N.T. - the Key Environmental Nonjudgemental Taskforce. But it's so under-funded it subsidises its work by running a launderette. And the twintub's malfunctioned. In a post-apocalyptic England, cattle-clasm has wiped out the majority of the livestock, there are new months such as Octember and Janril, and climate change has formed a drizzly new season called Hamble. Nebulous is determined to get Mother Earth back on the right track, nevertheless he must pit his wits against sentient dust, killer cacti, naked aliens and the evil Dr Klench (David Warner, "Titanic", "Star Trek VI") who's bent on world domination. Can K.E.N.T. save the day before the spin cycle finishes? "Nebulous" also stars Graham Crowden, Paul Putner and Rosie Cavaliero, and includes special sleeve notes by the writer Graham Duff.

Set in a futuristic Britain ravaged by eco-logical disasters, Nebulous manages to find a surprisingly rich vein of comedy in this dark scenario. The series is rich in parody and satire on science-fiction (the entire second episode is an extended parody of the Doctor Who episode "The Claws of Axos" - unsurprising given that most the cast and crew previously worked on Doctor Who), and the dialogues (and in many cases, rambling monologues) are sharp and clever. Overall, Nebulous is perhaps the best radio-sci-fi-comedy since The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and certainly the most consistent.

I bought this set of CDs in a random purchase moment. This turned out to be a great move, and I have re-listened to them many times and still find things to giggle at. The only downside is having to wait for the next set of discs, which is good problem to have. So, if you enjoy skillful writing, great acting and lovely characters i would recommend that you treat yourself to these discs.

I have an immense soft spot for this series and it often "serenades" me to sleep. Nebulous is a bizarre twist on the less-than polished Sci-Fi series of the 20th century; it evokes Quatermass, Doctor Who, Day of the Triffids and any number of earnest series made on one millionth of the budget of American Sci-Fi standards. In the end you'll enjoy a professional cast who know and play within the tropes of BritSciFi and milk it for all its worth.

So if you enjoy episodic comedy and have a fondness for shrill analogue synthesiser soundtracks, give this a go.

Now, where are the later series, pretty please!
