4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the Mammoth / Best of series, 28 Jan 2011

The Nebula book was OK, I prefer the Mammoth / Best of the year series of SF books. Still, it did have a few interesting sections.

2.0 out of 5 stars Puts you off science fiction., 30 Sep 2008

I used to read a lot of SF as a kid, and recently got into Neal Stephensons work, which has reawakened my interest in the genre. However, if this is really a 'showcase' for the best SF can offer, I don't think I'll bother looking any further. Once you get through ignoring all of the editorials, overviews and 'appreciations' which take up about half of the book there are about twelve short stories, about two of which I'd say presented interesting new ideas. The rest are either damp little squibs of ghost stories (Travels With My Cats) Pastiches of Golden Age SF (Dry Bones, Embracing The New) or much-anthologised stories from the past which have been stuck in as a 'tribute' to the author (The Ship Who Sang) Disappointing, and as I've said has actually put me off investigating the field.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only in-print version of "The Cookie Monster" by Vernor Vinge, 12 Jun 2009

Just a quick note that this anthology is the only in-print version of the novella "The Cookie Monster" by Vernor Vinge. If you're a Vernor Vinge completionist, you will need this collection.

"Nebula Awards Showcase 2006" is another collection of stories that you read and don't forget immediately. Another great-deal-treasure through Amazon.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hmmmm....is there a way to get a refund?, 14 Mar 2007
By D. Allen - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Nebula Awards Showcase 2006: The Year's Best SF and Fantasy Selected by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (Paperback)
I wanted to read some sci-fi, some high IQ stuff, some thought-provoking short stories I could read on the DART getting to and from work. Well, after reading all of these stories, I'm convinced that writers do not submit their prize stories for anthologies. They submit their scraps. That's craps with an extra S. I'm dissapointed. Maybe my expectations were too high. Perhaps if I lower my expectations to what one might expect if judging a suburban high school writing contest...hmmm...no, I'm still dissappointed. The people who put this together owe me $10 just for reading through it. If you read this then you should demand compensation. I am not better off after reading this anthology. Maybe I didn't do enough shrooms or hippie lettuce before reading it. :-(
