"'He convulses audiences with a brand of self-deprecating humour of such brilliant timing it reminds you of Bob Hope' Ian Wooldridge, Daily Mail; 'He's the funniest speaker on football I have heard in all my experience' Sir Bobby Robson; 'This man is magic' The late Sir Harry Secombe CBE; 'Bevan is such an accomplished joke writer and orator' Sunday Times"

Product Description

Firmly established in the world of entertainment, The Cat's route to fame has been through corporate and sporting dinners. He grew up loving sport and perservered despite having only one eye and an almost total absence of natural ability. His reputation as a figure of fun and his readiness to laugh at his own failures have reaped rich rewards. How many of us have played football with Bobby Moore and George Best at Wembley, or played at Lord's, or written a poem teasing the Duke of Edinburgh for never recognising us? In Nearly Famous, The Cat writes hilariously of the many famous people he has worked with - everyone from Colin Cowdrey, Bobby Robson and Terry Venables to Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart, Billy Connolly, Eric Morcambe and Brian Johnston - and the highs and lows of that most serious of businesses: making people laugh.

I'm a speechwriter and I picked up this book to learn some of Bob's tricks of the trade. The "Cat" - Bevan explains - is a clever PR hook, and it works, you remember his name and it's connected with his past as an amateur footballer. He's made a handsome living telling comical stories of his days as a hapless goalkeeper.

The book has lots of personal glimpses of famous people: Jimmy Savile, Arthur Lowe, Princess Anne, Rod Stewart, Billy Connolly, Bobby Moore and many others.

It has loads of stuff on football which isn't really my thing, but I was intrigued how Bevan picked a market and built a very successful career on it.

What I really got out of this book was how tough speaking is for people at all levels. You may be a top performer like Frankie Howerd or Billy Connolly, but sometimes you get it wrong, and the audience doesn't respond.

This book also an insight into how a man with quite a humble background, rose to the top of the PR profession, but packed it in to do what he loved. He tells you about his setbacks, the people he falls out with, the friends that pass on, and the perks and pains of the 'business'. I'd love to see him in action, he doesn't seem to have any clips on YouTube yet!
