This was the fifth series of the ever popular 'Nearest And Dearest' comedy, and the longest running which included eight hilarious episodes! Unfortunately this was marred by the fact that with the exception of the very first episode of this season, the rest were made in black and white due to the infamous strike at ITV that was going on at the time. This went on to affect and damage other TV greats from that era such as, and more notably 'Upstairs, Downstairs'.

This batch of episodes included the second christmas 'special', and was another series that included some of the best episodes ever made! We get to see Jimmy Jewel in drag; Walter as a 'Park Prowler' and a 'Mr. Universe'! (not in the same episode I might add!) Stan chasing after Nellie's 'special favours' in one, and posing as her 'Private Eyeball' in another! We also get to see Lily two-timing poor Walter with the Coal Man, and some viewers may be surprised at another appearance of a very young and 'sexy' Shirley Stelfox! (more recently of Emmerdale fame)

This was the first DVD collection to feature any bonus materials. The first is an interview of Jimmy Jewel by the handsome Maurie Taylor - viewers may be surprised to see what a quietly spoken gentleman Jimmy was - not at all like his character Eli! (unfortunately this clip includes the unedited bits which I cannot see the point of as the extra 'bits' serve no purpose and are basically only close ups of Maurie talking to himself!) The second being Hylda Baker paying a visit to a real Pickling Factory to do some tasting - a visit she made years after the series had ended in 1978!

For those of us who remember Hylda Baker and Jimmy Jewel, this whole series is a joy to watch and even my grandchildren watch it.
Each series is hilarious while suitable for children, unlike many of todays comedy.
There are golden moments when Hylda forgets what should come next and Jimmy Jewel finds it funny.
There are stars of Coronation Street and other memorable comedy shows and once you have bought the first series, you just have to buy the rest.
With Amazon`s free delivery this is well worth buying.

This is a series that I watched when it was first broadcast and it had me in fits of laughter every week. All the characters are larger than life. The 2 stars spar off each other. You can buy each series or the complete series box which is terrific value.
