I bought this book for my mum who has been recently diagnosed with diabetes and had a very high blood glucose levels. She heard about this book from another patient and was keen to give it a go. She has been on this new lifestyle for over a month now and her blood glucose hasn't gone above 6 considering she already reduced significantly the dose of her current medication. Although she snacks a lot during the day, she has lost weight and feels really good.
She was feeling a bit concerned initially that this new lifestyle would take away from her the fun of eating out with friends, however Dr Barnard recommends certain meals from the most popular cuisines, so we've been able to enjoy meals out with her without feeling isolated or left out.
My mum has adapted a lot of the meals and is following the principles from Dr Barnard's cook book to suit her taste. She is also discovering a lot of new foods she hadn't tried before and is quite inventive in preparing her own food. She still cooks for all of us,however doesn't show any interest in eating or even tasting the "wrong" foods.
As the results from Dr Barnard's eating habits are observed very quickly, that is such a strong motivator for my mum that she is doing the right thing and will be able to stop medication eventually altogether!
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to take control of their illness through nutritional changes. It really works!

A very convincing book. Very similar to the Mcdougall Plan. BUT, if you buy this don't buy The Reverse Diabetes Diet by the same author because both books are exactly the same. I bought both because I thought they were companion volumes, one about the plan and the other about the diet. Had to send one back & pay return postage.

I was diagnosed with Type 2 in March this year and the doctor started talking of tablets for the diabetes and others to keep my cholesterol and blood pressure steady as this would be needed to help the side effects of the diabetes on blood vessels etc.
I was 53, size 16, 12st 6lb, average BSL was 10.2, cholesterol 5.2. I asked my doctor to give me three months to try and loose some weight and try to bring these stats down...she agreed.

I found it a bit difficult to follow this regime at first as everything I wanted to eat seemed to have some sort of animal fat in it but with the help Vegan food lists from various supermarket chains I found it easy to plan my meals. If you are looking at these reviews you have probably been diagnosed with Type 2 and know you have to bring down your BS levels. I have followed this for 4 whole months now and just look at my new stats. Still 53, size 10, 10st ( yes I have lost 34lb by diet change only) average BSL 7.2, cholesterol 3.8 and normal blood pressure. My doctor was amazed at the results so I showed her the book and just to check that I was not missing anything in my diet. I am taking a good multi vitamin as Dr Barnard says in the book otherwise everything else I eat is Vegan...and I now do not miss the meat..or cheese..at all. I have so much more energy and never feel hungry. I have three friends who have been so amazed at the change in me that they are following the same "Lifestyle" now and are seeing the same results in their weight and energy levels. Like another reviewer said....this is your health that is on the line. I was devastated when I was told I had Type 2 and even more so when they told me what could happen to me because of having it. I am more than happy to continue with this lifestyle ( I prefer to call it that other rather than diet which sounds a bit of a fad) as it is having such a wonderful effect on my whole health.

I really recommend this book it is easy to follow and really does work.....by the way there is one negative to this new way of life......it has cost me a fortune in new clothes !!!!!!!

My best friend was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes two months ago and I've researched tons of books, web sites and other information about this condition in order to help him.

Unfortunately, official medicine seem uninterested in healing people with diabetes (both types), other than keeping their sugar levels low with medications in attempt to prolong their life. It seems that nothing has changed in treating this condition since the times when my grandfather had it. As a result of such "treatment" patients only further develop their insulin resistance (with type 2) and require more and more different medicines over time. I have not heard stories of people being completely healed by such drugs, quite on contrary, there are plenty of unfortunate stories of people losing sight, kidneys, limbs and even dying.

At the same time there is a simple way to improve your condition by simply eliminating products that caused diabetes in the first place - all animal products including fish and dairy, refined oils, sugars, alcohol and junk food. Replace it with vegetables, quality whole carbohydrates (yes) - like brown rice, quinoa, buckwheat; exercise daily, use natural and inexpensive supplements; fast, if you can; and you will start feeling better day by day.

There is no-one out there who can heal you, but yourself. And you have everything to be healthy. All you need is the right direction, and this book gives you enough information to find it. It is written by a doctor who dared to experiment and he discovered a very simple way to cure diabetes with incredibly high success level.

While I would urge you not to stop there and continue your research, this book is a very good start, in fact in has everything to change your life and get you on the road to recovery.

Coming back to my friend, he followed a program we developed for him, which is very similar to the one described in this book, for two months and last week his analysis came completely clean - Hemoglobin A1c 5.8, glucose 5.5. Of course it is not the reason to revert back to a previous diet, rather a motivation to go even further.

If you or your friend/relative have diabetes, especially type 2, you need to buy this book and give it a try. I do hope it will work for you same way it did for my friend. It's all in your hands.

UPDATE: It's been 6 months since my friend was diagnosed with diabetes and about 5 months since he adopted a diet similar to the one described in this book (I think a bit more advanced) and he is now virtually free of any symptoms - his blood sugar is always normal, and he feels less tired and in general much better than before. He only lost about 1 1/2 stone (9 kg) but considering it was done without any restrictions on food intake (he's a bit of an eater so it's hard to change) it's a good result.

If you or your relatives or friends have diabetes, please buy this book and research further but most important, stop eating foods that made you ill, and you too can become diabetes-free. It's not a miracle, it's only natural to live a healthy and happy life. Good luck.

This book is a must for anyone who is associated in any way to the dreaded "D"

The book explains in a very lucid fashion what diabetes is and then goes on to explain Dr Barnard's approach to not only curing the symptoms but also targeting at the root cause of the disease. Making changes to your diet will drastically improve the quality of life. I have started the program and already feel good.. I have gifted 3 copies of the book to others I know who would benefit from this.

In this book Dr.Barnard explains the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Very basically in type 1 diabetes insulin is not produced whilst in type 2 insulin is produced but the type of fat in our cells doesn't allow it to be utilized correctly. (This is just my synopsis, please read the book!).

By following DR.Barnard's dietary suggestions the cells of the type 2 diabetic become able to use the insulin and the damaging effects of too much sugar in the blood is stopped even reversed. The diet does not cure type 1 diabetes but it does induce vast improvements in health. It is excellent in the treatment of type 2.

I think everyone should read this book, not just diabetics. He also explains how being vegan helps lower blood pressure and cholesterol etc.

I have been following a low fat, low gi, vegan diet since reading it: bloods normal, full and happy, don't get tired, nor thirsty, clear vision, feel wonderful, have no desire whatsoever to eat sugary food, and enjoying experimenting with new flavours and recipes. freedom :-)

This book should be on the NHS and every GP should be made to read it.
The book explains how type 1&2 diabetes come about in terms you can understand simply. Although it's written by an american, us brit's can understand it,even the blood tests are calculated in mmol/l 5.6 and so on.some of the facts about the sugars and fats in the normal food we eat is quite alarming.this book will show you the way to eat a plant base diet and not be hungry and get off the pills. The book was a used copy and came on time from the USA,and you could not tell it had been used.

This was a gift for a friend that has diabetes with lots of related and severe problems. I didn't look at it when I received it, just noted that it was in extremely good condition, then I posted it off to my friend in America. He received it the other day and was very pleased...just in the first few minutes of looking at it, he found a very useful tip and says there are lots of good recipes in it too.
