Book Description

1 Sep 1998
Volume 4 of this acclaimed series of documents with commentary is the most substantial study of the German home front in World War II available in English. It illuminates the nature of Nazism and the regime it established by documenting politics and life in wartime Germany: government and party, law and terror, welfare and social planning, sex and population policy, women, youth, propoganda, morale and resistance.

Product Description

... a triumphant finale to a remarkable publishing enterprise which began life almost a quarter of a century ago ... [and] required reading for anyone in the Anglophone world with an academic interest in Nazism. The immense value of the current, and final, volume in the series lies not so much in the continuing tradition of clearly written text and imaginatively chosen documents, though these virtues survive, as in the fact that much of the history of the home front is still relatively virgin territory. The documentary thread running through the text has to tell a story which cannot easily be discovered from any other source. ... None of the entries is superfluous; each tells a part of the wider story, which is unobtrusively woven around the documents by a deft editorial hand. This is no ordinary document collection. With its detailed collection of revealing sources this book offers a fascinating insight into the different aspects of German life and society on the German Home Front. Many general readers will be familiar with the British Home Front but not that of the Germans. This source book is, by its nature, not an easy read but instead it sets out to bring key (translated) sources into the hands of students of Nazi Germany. An essential reference tool for undergraduates studying Nazi Germany during WW2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent reference book 29 Dec 2013

This book and the other three in the series are fine reference books not the type you pick up and read for "light reading" , they are academically written but do not let that put you off, they provide excellent insight and a well constructed and informative history of Hitler's German and what he wanted Germany to be.
A good book to pick up and to consult and for one doing a history degree an excellent aid, for the general reader yes one which can be used and one which will take you beyond the "general knowledge" of most books you will find in Easons.
