United Kingdom released, PAL/Region 2 DVD: LANGUAGES: Spanish ( Dolby Digital 2.0 ), English ( Subtitles ), SPECIAL FEATURES: Black & White, Interactive Menu, Scene Access, SYNOPSIS: From acclaimed director Luis Bunuel, comes another tale about morality and the church. Nazarin is one of Brunuel's quartet of adaptations of the great 19th century Spanish writer Benito Perez Galdos, and, with Simon Of The Desert forms the best of his explorations of religion. The story, told in the manner of a Christian parable, is about a humble and unworldly priest who attempts to live by the precepts of Christianity, but is despised for his pains. The film was ambiguous enough to win the International Catholic Cinema Office Award - a supreme irony for the cinema's most famous anti-Catholic atheist - and also won the Grand Prix Internationale at the 1959 Cannes film festival The theme of the impossibility of leading a pure Christian life was further explored in Viridiana (1961). SCREENED/AWARDED AT: Cannes Film Festival, ...Nazarin ( Nazarín )

This 1958 film from legendary director Luis Bunuel is not one of his most well-know, but having just seen it I can say it's certainly one ofhis best.

It's also his most atypical film. For a film-maker renowned for his athiest and anti-clerical views NAZARIN is a surprisingly ambiguous tale.

A devout Catholic priest working in poverty-stricken areas of Mexico is determined to live and devote his life to Christ. His attempts to live a pureley Christian life meet with obstacles and hostility at every turn.

Depending on your own religious world view the film is either an affirmation of the power of faith or a total negation of it. Either way it's an incredibly powerful and moving experience. It's part of Bunuel's genius here that he does not force his hand and lets the individual decide.

Performances are stunning - particularly from Francisco Rabal, dogged and

consumed with passion.

By turns harrowing, riotously funny and unbearably moving NAZARIN is an amazing film that deserves it's place with Bunuel's finest work and certainly ranks alongside Pasolini's GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW as one of the greatest of all religious films.

One of Buñuel's best 10 Aug 2008
Format:DVD
Spanish director Luis Buñuel career spanned almost 50 years, from 1929 to 1977. Arguably, his best films were those he made during his exile in Mexico - from the late forties to the early 60s. There he had to deal with very cheap budgets, and work in an industry interested mainly in churning commercial movies to unsophisticated audiences, yet he somehow managed to make interesting, thought provoking movies that have stand the test of time. This movie is based on a novel by Spanish author Benito Perez Galdos - and the adaptation is quite faithful, even if the setting is now early 20th century Mexico instead of early 20th century Spain. The protagonist, Nazarin, is a priest who tries to live a life that is as faithful as it can be to the one prescribed by Christ. The question many would ask is whether such endeavor would be possible, without incurring in the hostility, incomprehension and mockery of your fellow human beings. As it happens, he suffers a lot of indignities, yet he remains stubborn (until the controversial final shot) to this objective. I think Buñuel wanted to show Nazarin as a somewhat ridiculous figure, but perhaps inadvertently, his stubbornness (at least to this viewer) comes out as admirable. In any case, a great film.
