THE NAVY LARK MEMORIES OF SUNDAY AFTERNOONS, 9 Jan 2004
This review is from: The "Navy Lark": Collector's Edition, the Early Years (Radio Collection) (Hardcover)
THIS WONDERFUL COLLECTORS EDITION CONJURS UP LAZY SUNDAY AFTERNOONS OF MY YOUNGER DAYS WHEN EVERYTHING STOPPED AT 2P.M TO LISTEN TO THE CREW OF H.M.S. TROUTBRIDGE.THE STAR OF THE SHOW THE INCREDIBLE JON PERTWEE ALWAYS MANAGED TO STEER THE REST OF THE CREW AROUND HIS DODGY DEALINGS,THE VERY SMOOTH LESLIE PHILLIPS AS THE LADIES MAN NEVER DID SEEM TO GET THE LADIES WHILST A VERY YOUNG RONNIE BARKER PLAYED SOME WONDERFUL PARTS.
WHILST MOST OF THESE EPISODES HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE ON TAPE THEY SEEM EVEN BETTER ON C.D....I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE EPISODE BEING MADE AVAILABLE ON C.D. IN THE NEAR FUTURE.
THE NAVY LARK MUST BE ONE OF THE B.B.C.GREATEST RADIO SHOWS OF ALL TIME...IF YOU HAVE NEVER HEARD IT YOU ARE IN FOR A REAL TREAT WITH THIS SET AND AS THE SERIES MOVES ON IT GETS BETTER AND FUNNIER.

The Navy Lark, Series One March-July 1959. Lovely morning for it!, 8 Mar 2010
This review is from: The "Navy Lark": Collector's Edition, the Early Years (Radio Collection) (Hardcover)
Cor! I Say! Finally, we have a decent CD release of one of the great classic radio comedies, `The Navy Lark'. This set contains all the surviving episodes from the first series, detailing the misadventures of a Navy draught stationed on a certain small Island just off Portsmouth. Starring Jon Pertwee as the corrupt Petty Officer, aided and abetted by Able Seaman Johnson (an early role for the great Ronnie Barker), pulling the wool over the eyes of their commanding officers - Number One (a very wily Dennis Price), Sub-lieutenant Philips (Leslie Philips) and Captain Povey (Richard Caldicott). And lets not forget the wonderful Tenniel Evans as Able Seaman Goldstein, an invaluable part of the crew...
In later series, episodes descended largely into farce and stupidity. This early series had great plots with clever and inventive story lines, usually based around Pertwee's latest scam and his attempts to keep out of trouble. For my money, this series was the best.
This set is excellent. The sixteen episodes are presented on 8 discs, each held in a separate slip case. All are gathered together into a sturdy cardboard outer. There is also a booklet with episode and cast details. There are no extras, but with the age of the series this is not surprising.
The restoration is excellent. The episodes sound better than they have in any previous release, and are a joy to listen to.
Episodes are:-
The Missing Jeep
Operation Fag End
Number One's Chair
The Fairground Lights
The Comfort Fund
Stuck Up The Inlet
The Admiral's Party
The Hank Of Heather
The Multiple Mines
The Gun Mechanism Test
The Whittlesea Bay Yacht Regatta
The Psychology Test
The Watch On The Initiative Test
An Exercise In Filming
The Smuggling Spy
The Whittlesea Carnival And Fete
This is great stuff. Well done BBC for a great release, keep them coming!
