Great GPS,
By RogMc (Reading UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Navman N20 Satellite Navigation System With UK Mapping (Electronics)
I've had the N20 for a few weeks now and I am delighted with it. Main selling points for me were:
- Lightweight and small. This is definitely true, it fits perfectly into the back pocket of my jeans when I leave the car parked. Just remember to take it out before you sit down. - 5 hour battery life. Haven't timed it, but it certainly seems very good. Ideal if, like me, you plan to take it out on leisurely bike rides or city breaks. - Full European maps. I was a bit dubious about this one, as I'd read that unlock keys may be required to load the maps from CD. I'd even been told this by Navman about the older icn-530 model the N20 replaces. But, they unlocked automatically in the SmartST software and loaded perfectly. Bear in mind that I had to buy a 2G SD card to load them onto, but I picked one up for £20 so no big problem. Or if you've got a 1G stick lying about, you can put most Europe (excluding Scandinavia) on it. - No U-turns. The Back-on-track feature works really well. If you decide to take a different route, it re-calculates really quickly and has been spot on so far. I'd read in other reviews that the sound quality was bad, i.e. low volume. I can say that this defiantly isn't true. With 3 screaming kids in the back and the CD player on, 3 quarter volume on the N20 is perfectly audible. After all, you only want it as audible background noise. The included Points of Interest are great, especially if you're interested in speed (safety?) cameras, parking or petrol stations (also comes with loads more). And I've found it very easy to download your own POI's from the web and transfer to the N20. I'd also read that it doesn't come with a mains charger (optional extra) - very useful for charging out of the car. This is true, but it was a nice surprise to find out that it actually charges using the included USB cable. The screen is great, nice and bright. Good solid windscreen mount. If I had to find a fault with it, it's sometimes taken 1-2 minutes to lock to a GPS signal when I turn it on while moving in the car. Not sure if this is because I'm moving or possibly where I've mounted it? All in all, a great GPS for a great price.

My first Sat Nav!,

This review is from: Navman N20 Satellite Navigation System With UK Mapping (Electronics)
As with the previous review, this works straight out of the box ready to go. The only thing it doesn't come with is a standard mains charger so you must either charge in the car or via USB. In use the system is fairly straight forward and generally easy to use. The touchscreen works well and the dedicated buttons make the system easier to use when out and about as opposed to touchscreen only units, the buttons also have their own back light which is very handy.
Battery life is good, the voices fine (although there are only 2 UK voices to choose from). Some people complain the speaker isn't loud enough but I haven't had a problem so far. Most importantly it gets you where you want to go, which is the whole point after all. The Back-On-Track feature works perfectly which means if you know a better route just take it and the unit recalculates the route to match your location. There are also good route planning options such as waypoints and avoid areas. There is even a detour function which is similar to the roadblock function on the TomTom units. I haven't really used other makes in anger but the Navman does all I want it to. There is also the option for real-time traffic via the optional T1 traffic module which could be very handy if you do a lot of miles. Highly recommended.

My first Sat Nav system - SUPERB,
By Steve G (Hertfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Navman N20 Satellite Navigation System With UK Mapping (Electronics)
Bought this 4 days ago and am yet to be disappointed. It comes out of the box and can be used straight away - no need to use the manual. If you turn the wrong way (deliberate or otherwise) it recalculates your new route in seconds. The volume is fine and picture quality great - actually had to lower the brightness at night, even using the night time colours it offers.
It contains many plesantly suprising features. As I was driving home on the day I bought it, it made a noise and a yellow box flashed up on screen - a speed camera up ahead - AMAZING! You can change the colour of the maps to something you like better, address search is very easy, the female voice is not annoying. The instructions are clear and are repeated the right number of times. Couple of very tiny gripes. The postcode facilty is not 100% accuate. Did a search for a property I knew to have the postcode ending in 6AS and it told me to go a street around the corner from it. When I typed in the address, it told me the house was in 6AU which is not correct. This may be more to do with Royal Mail's database however. Also the software is not compatible with Windows ME.
