Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

It’s all in the design

Mio is taking a fresh exciting approach to navigation with its new Navman Spirit range for an experience that goes well beyond A to B.

With three models across two design options, what’s immediately striking when you pick them up is just how slim and lightweight each model is. Ergonomically designed with soft-curve edges, these are some of the thinnest Sat Navs in the world. But it’s beneath the stylish, compact exterior that the really innovative stuff happens. Switch them on and the new menus, maps and navigational tools are simply a joy to use.

Widescreen navigation

The S500 range takes widescreen navigation even further to an impressive 4.7’ screen size.

More than just the basics

Like most other Sat Navs available today, all the basics are covered, such as finding your destination easily, avoiding traffic, being aware of road speeds and safety cameras and helping the driver negotiate difficult junctions. In particular, Navman Spirit’s new Junction Views feature is a great help as the screen accurately displays a motorway sign in 3D as you approach an exit.

Bluetooth Technology

Enjoy Hands-free calling whilst driving with integrated Bluetooth built in.

Mio Spirit software

Heralding a new ear of navigation, Navman Spirit is designed for a new generation of adventurers. Able to plan their trips ahead of time and take them down to the correct route, whilst providing more real-time information for exploring what's nearby, the ‘Spirit’ part of the name refers to the new software that powers the range. Redesigned from the ground up, Spirit uses a simple and colourful menu system that takes you to all of the features within a couple of ‘taps’. The Navman Spirit’s new Slide Touch™ screen brings up windows that glide on and off to help you find what you’re looking for quickly, so you only ever need to go back to the main menu when you want to.

Top Features

Stay ahead of traffic

Avoid traffic hold-ups and congestion. Using the very latest technology, the Navman Spirit gives you real-time traffic information so you’ll always know what’s on the road ahead.

Easily view juntions ahead on the screen™ views
A new approach to lanes and junctions

With Lane Guidance, the Navman Spirit helps you get into the correct lane to make a turn, so useful with today’s busier roads. The Spirit software also features realistic 3D Junction Views that match major road signs, giving you more time to understand what’s ahead as you approach an exit or major junction.

Know your limits

Pre-loaded safety camera data helps keeps you on the right side of the speed limit. If you’re speeding or approaching a camera, a visual and verbal warning gives you time to safely slow down. The Navman Spirit can also flag up the speed limit of the road you’re on, encouraging safer driving.

Smarter, greener routing

The Navman Spirit’s Economical Routing option assesses and reduces the number of junctions on your chosen route, so you can cut down on stopping and starting, fuel usage and also help lower your car’s CO2 emissions.

Go with a guide

Pre-loaded into every new Navman Spirit are Travel Books from Wcities. Browse the in-depth listings of tourist attractions, places to eat, stay and visit, full of facts and photos. There are hundreds more to choose from, all quick and easy to download when you connect to MioMore™ Desktop 2 via your PC.

Go even further on foot

The Navman Spirit works brilliantly both in and out of the car. Walking Mode is developed to help you find your way around major cities on foot with buildings outlined for easier navigation. By helping you discover new places not accessible by car, Navman takes navigation a step further. Now you really can explore more.

1.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great features, just a shame they don't work properly, 28 Jan 2010

Dave (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Navman S500HF Traffic Satellite Navigation System Mapping Europe (Electronics)
I bought this because of the features such as traffic, handsfree, google local search and junction views which together with the larger than average screen size seemed to set it above others in the price range. I ended up being very disapointed and it went back. Things to note are: The software keeps freezing and giving an "unrecoverable application error" screen meaning you have to turn it off and on again. The touch screen is very unresponsive and rather than a touch or gentle tap you sometimes need to give it a hefty prod to get any response at all (which tends to knock it off the stand!). The handsfree microphone is very unresponsive meaning you have to shout to get the other person to be able to hear anything and if the unit is more than about 2 feet from your mouth it won't pick up your voice at all. Other issues with the handsfree calling are when you receive an incoming call (assuming you can get the unit to recognise your tap on the "answer call" button there is a delay of about 20 seconds between the call being answered and being able to hear the caller or they hear you - several people just assumed there was nobody there and hung up. When making a call you sometimes hear a ringing tone and sometimes don't. The speaker is very tinny and distorts above 80% volume but really to hear it on the move you need to have it at 100%. The junction view sounds useful but note that it only works on motorway intersections (e.g. m4 to m5) not on normal motorway junctions and even then the view screen doesn't come up until its too late as you would have already been in the wrong lane by then. It also wanted me to get in the lane to get back onto the m4 when trying to leave the m4 westbound to go onto the m5 northbound - it suggested I follow signs for m4 South Wales even though the route was set to Gloucester! It also wanted me to take the 5th exit off a roundabout that only had three exits! It seemed very keen to take me down minor narrow lanes rather than major roads that were only a few metres longer. The final destination of every journey I tried was about 500m away from where the destination address actualy was, even for buildings that had their own postcode. Also beware that the nice shiny black bezel scratches if you so much as glance at it so a case will be essential if you are going to carry it around and as it is bigger than most other 4.3" units you can't use a universal case.
The google local search does work well (if your phone supports it) so you can access a much larger range of POIs than other units that just rely on ones that are in their memory. The keyword search also works well saving you having to think which category to search in but given the touchscreen's issues & software instability you still get fustrated using it. The traffic picks up what you need to know and displays it on the screen in a recognisable format but doesn't seem to advise of delay time (or maybe I didn't have it long enough to find out) and to re-route to avoid a traffic warning requires quite a few menu inputs so not ideal whilst driving. The standard map view may be a bit plain for some and it doesn't make the best of the screen size. There are a number of map colour scheme options to choose between so you should be able to find one that suits you. The speed warning were a bit of a nuisance as it had the wrong speed limits for a number of roads - both ways - it was telling me off for driving at 37 in 40 limit that it thought was a 30 but on another road that was reduced from delimit to 40 about four years ago it still thought the national speed limit applied.
After getting a refund I bought a Garmin Nuvi 265WT which so far has performed flawlessly and has a much better feeling of quality and the touchscreen, handsfree and traffic all work as you would hope. (and it was £30 less).

1.0 out of 5 stars Dont bother with this one, 7 Feb 2010
This review is from: Navman S500HF Traffic Satellite Navigation System Mapping Europe (Electronics)
Would just like to say I did not buy this product from Amazon but do buy a lot from Amazon so wanted to come here and give a review.

Bought this Sat nav because I travel a lot for work and wanted something reliable that had handsfree calling capability. Forget trying to make calls using the device as no one can hear you even when you are stationary and the cars engine isnt running. The only time the handsfree calling worked well and people could hear me was when I was holding the device in my hand

I have been driving and missed a turning that the sat nav was telling me to go down, and it took about a minute to recalculate instead of doing it automatically.

Its very slow to update and although I have tried to zoom out on the map it often goes back to zooming in and only showing where my current location is and not the surrounding area.

It tells me that Im on a 60mph road when I know that Im on a 30mph road and it says there are no speed cameras where I know there are fully working speed cameras.

Dont trust this device. It lies!

I have just had to take it back in order to purchase a different one.

    5.0 out of 5 stars I'm getting there now!!!!, 19 Jan 2010
This review is from: Navman S500HF Traffic Satellite Navigation System Mapping Europe (Electronics)
Such an improvement on my previous SatNavs! This does everything it says on the tin and does it very well indeed. Before I bought it I checked many reviews on many sites. Most seemed to criticise the screen display for being too light, particularly in sunlight. OK, we've not experienced much sun since I acquired it, but when we did I found the display perfectly adequate. It can be changed to suit personal preference. The other major criticism was the difficulty of screen selection by sliding one's finger down the screen. I have to agree that this has turned out to be a "no-no" for me. Slding one's finger when driving is, to say the least, dangerous, and any jerk of the vehicle at the time means you end up on the wrong screen. I simply use the poking finger method; faster, safer, more accurate selection.

All in all I love this piece of kit.
