Not bad for £90, 28 Jul 2008
I have read the reviews on this product, no one seems too happy with it, so I thought id put up my first review with the view to help everyone out. Firstly I will say I had the same problems that were mentioned by previous reviewers, howver after doing the following(see below) everything is perfect!
So for the ones that have kept it and not returned it back, the latest software for this product is version 6.2 build 902(FREE UPDATE). To get this all you need to do is Install Navigon FRESH on your PC (free software on Navigon site) --- http://www.navigon.com/site/uk/en/maps_services/navigon_fresh -- It runs on XP/Vista. Once you have installed the program everything is self explanetory. The first thing I would advise in navigon FRESH is to backup your SD card (contains original MN6 files, you will need a card reader). Once you have backed up the card (takes about 30mins), then run the software update (takes 10mins). The update is VERRRY useful, along with the latest software, it also has the latest version of POIwarner, 1.10, this updates all the POI, trust me I was shocked when i did the update and found my local tesco( 1 year old) on the map!!! The 6.2 update fixe's a number of issues, firstly my TMC works everywhere I have been (london, m1, m25 area), the system is much much faster (TIP keep animation off in basic settings - improves speed), Calculations and reroutes are working like any other sat nav (5-6 seconds to recalculate), routes are also perfect i did a nearby search on POI for a park and it found it, plus many other updates. OH THE SAFTEY CAMERAS have also been updated quite well with POI 1.10....:). I did a route from london to zurich it calculated it in under 1 minute!
If you do the above then id also advise purchasing a spare SD card, I bought a Transcend 4GB Secure Digital(SD) (NOT SDHC) Card Product code is TS4GSDC, the original is now safly back in the box. The reason I purchased this is because a. I wanted to have a perm backup of my card b. the future maps will get bigger for Europe, the current size is 1.7GB, I have heard the new maps size is going to be 2.1gb with new POI etc.
Moving onto the subject of MAPS well they are very old, but that is the case with most sat nav's when you buy them after they have been on the market for a while, for £55 you get 24months worth of maps updates, I dont think that is too bad, Im sure there will be about 2-3 updates in 24months, which works out quite good.
The actual physical hardware of the system is actually still very up-to-date, it has the SIRFIII chip whcih is still in all new sat navs, and it also has the same Samsung processer and WIN ce 5 which new sat navs have. The only thing I kinda did not like was how fat it was, but for for £90 and all the included extras, chargers, stylus stick etc you cant go wrong. Also everything I have mentioned is within the warrenty and nothing will get invalid.
The GPS signal... first time out of the box takes 20mins to connect, after that it is up straight away once the system has started (about 1minute average time to start). TIP start the sat nav before your car is moving, strangly I have found when I start driving the GPS connection takes longer to connect! Also if your having problems with the touchscreen not responding when you tap then just recalobrate it and all is fine.
I hope this helps everyone who has this model. Hopefully all the previous reviewers will see this review!! :) good luck!
