Product Description

Kevin Walker, the co-author of The Essential Hillwalker's Guide, presents a beginner's guide to finding your way. His simple techniques give walkers the freedom of the hills, providing them with confidence and a greater appreciation of the landscape.

Part One covers maps, mapping and map interpretation, and shows how to use a map to give an incredibly detailed picture of the terrain. Part Two is concerned with compasses and bearings, and explains how simple techniques can give an accurate measure of direction in even the thickest mist. Part Three contains a whole range of additional techniques for use in poor visibility, featureless terrain and other difficult situations. Part Four deals with the real art of navigation - how to work out where you are when you think you are lost.

First Sentence
This is one of the first questions I ask people who come on my navigation courses, and although it is outwardly simply, it often results in surprisingly puzzled expressions! Of course, we all know - to a greater or lesser extent - what a map is, but actually putting it into words seems to cause problems. Read the first page

This proved to be a really excellent book. I liked the emphasis the author put on map interpratation more than for instance compass work. I had never looked at a map in such detail before, now I examine every little squiggle. You will certainly learn from this book and it's made nice and simple to follow.
The only downside is that some examples are made with reference to one OS sheet (Black Mountains), without having a copy to look at makes reading the examples a little pointless. It would have been better if map extracts appeared in the book.
On the plus side it's a really handy size for your coat pocket so you can take it out on the hills when your practising your techniques.

A Useful Read. 7 Sep 2010
By Paul
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A very nice introduction to the subject of overland navigation. Good explanation of first principles and developing into very useful subjects dealing with 'difficult situations' such as navigating over relatively featureless terrain; at night; during winter; and what to do if oneself or a member of the party are, to quote Mr Walker, 'temporarily mislocated' and then how to reorientate oneself or to search for the missing member.

The size of the book is small and light enough to be slipped into a pocket while out practicing the necessary skills, or to act as an aide-memoire in times of crisis. While the book is of comparatively modest size, the type is of a good size and easy to read, and is well illustrated with photographs and line drawings.
