Review

"NO FOC'SLE'S fully furnished without it. Angus Konstam's appealingly presented sampler brings together all manner of maritime lore. From the bowline to the boatswain's pipe; from the Top 10 knots to Nelson's funeral; minesweeping methods and memorable quotations; anchor design, the articles of war, acronyms of the US Navy, notable ship's mascots, figureheads and landlocked navies. Konstam has been around the Horn a fair few times as a naval historian: immense learning worn lightly, entertainingly presented, are the keynotes." -"The Scotsman
""While many miscellanies (trivia books) are primarily a compilation of lists, Konstam opted to write fascinating articles to whet the reader's appetite. His intent was to appeal not only to naval enthusiasts, but anyone with a curiosity about naval history... What makes "Naval Miscellany "such a delight to read is I can pick and choose the titles that most appeal to me or skip around, rather than reading the book from beginning to end. Alth

4.0 out of 5 stars Jolly good read. 14 Sep 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
A collection of nautical facts, yarns and myths condensed into a handy sized hard covered book.
Each article is of a reasonable length and is probably ideal for those few minutes prior to sleep.
The articles are well written, short and informative and on drifting into sleep means that there is
no plot or paragraph to revisit on awakening or the next night. Having said that I found it quite
hard to 'put-down' and completed the book over two nights.
Ideal information for stocking up on little known nautical facts or for correcting the pub
'know-it-all'.
Throughly entertaining, educational and a jolly good read! Recommended to those with a nautical
- or not- flair in their reading material.

5.0 out of 5 stars A sailor's collection of nautical qualities and facts about the sea 18 July 2010
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Naval Miscellany offers a sailor's collection of nautical qualities and facts about the sea, blending yarns about pirates and escapades with rowdy songs and history to make for a rollicking, fun read. Any sailor will find this an outstanding presentation, and any nautical library will also relish the variety of stories and experiences.
5.0 out of 5 stars The Joy of Decks 14 Jan 2013
By J. R. Trtek - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This small book of over 200 pages contains a treasure trove of information, and to me it's one of those "browsers" rather than a "reader." That is, although you can read it straight through from beginning to end, you can just as well sample the short sections of one to three pages however you like. From basic facts to fascinating trivia, it's engrossing no matter what approach you use. From carronades to jack speak, from anchors to piping the side, the book is simply hard to close. For naval fanatics or history buffs in general, or just for the curious, it's a marvelous little tome. Highly recommended.
