With two solid seasons already banked, NCIS returns for a compelling third year with exciting plotlines and a slightly tweaked cast. The show's second season ended with the brutal and shocking death of Caitlin Todd (Sasha Alexander). The first two episodes of this season deal with the aftermath of bringing her killer to justice and examining the emotional impact of her loss on the remaining members of the NCIS team, which is led by Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). The six-disc set includes all 24 episodes, which aired on CBS during 2005-2006. Returning are happy-go-lucky ladies' man Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly, Dark Angel), forensics expert and resident Goth chick Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette), medical examiner Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard (David McCallum, The Man from U.N.C.L.E), and agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray). Former Mossad intelligence officer Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) joins the close-knit cast, as does Jennifer Shepard (Lauren Holly, Dumb & Dumber) as the new NCIS director. Working on a daily basis with Shepard initially makes Gibbs wary. Not only is she a former girlfriend, but she also was his underling at one time. Equal parts CSI and JAG, NCIS works primarily because of its quirky cast, which is able to take sometimes regurgitated ideas and rework them into something engagingly watchable. Throughout this season, we will see agents endangered and framed, and one will accidentally kill an undercover detective who may not have been armed. But the explosive two-part season finale will finally shed light on Gibbs' painful history and help explain why he is who is he today. --Jae-Ha Kim

IF you watched the end of season 2 than you must buy this simply to watch what gibbs does to ari, but on top of that there are some amazing episodes and a fantastic season finale. Although many were upset at cait leaving in the last season, Ziva, fills in the role and quickly grows on you. A simply must have for ncis fans or simply people that have to see the absolute best of what tv has to offer....however, watch season 2 first!

Series 3 of NCIS is where the program really blossoms. The denouement of the Ari storyline is superb, and the subsequent addition of Ziva David takes the dynamics of the team to a new level. The loss of Kate is treated in a way both touching and very funny (I know that sounds odd, but it's true), and the melding of the team as they deal with a variety of cases is a pleasure to watch.

The scriptwriting in this series reaches new heights as well. Though many of the plots contain gaping holes, the stories are carried off with such pace and verve that the viewer rarely stops to question them. The stories themselves are varied and exciting; I often found myself concerned for the fate of cast members that I knew very well - by the nature of series - would survive.

But it is the strength of the characterisation that raises this series head and shoulders above all the other police procedurals: Mark Harmon's tough but caring ex-Marine is thoroughly believable; Michael Weatherly manages to make you like the obnoxious but somehow charming Tony DiNozzo; Cote de Pablo makes the spiky, aggressive Mossad agent Ziva a wonderful counter to DiNozzo's insouciance, while occasionally revealing a gentler, vulnerable side; and Sean Murray's clever but gawky Timothy McGee completes a classic mixture that compares well with any fictional team one could name.

Neither do the supporting cast disappoint; both Abby (Pauley Perrette) and Ducky (David McCallum) have major parts to play during the series, and do it magnificently, and the smaller recurring roles are all well acted.

All in all, this is one of the best series of (to my mind) the best police series ever to come out of the USA.

NCIS is getting better with every series. The addition of Cote de Pablo and Lauren Holly was inspired casting and more than makes up for the loss of Sasha Alexander. One of my favourite episodes was the one concentrating on Abby. Other highlights was the introduction of Duckys mother and the two parter at the end of the series.
